Given Round 1 of the NFL Draft is this evening in Green Bay, thought I would start an NFL 2025 thread, as last season's thread hasn't had a post in couple of months.

I grew up in the area and have been to Lambeau for over 100 games. I have to chuckle with people traveling in to watch something that really is better watched at home. You can only have so many brats, beers and fish fries in a weekend.

I went to the draft in Chicago a couple years ago. It's a fun time. The atmosphere is like a playoff game. If you're in town, definately give it a go.

The Bears are drafting at 10 tonight. It's a mystery what Poles will pull out of his hat this year. The O-line is still weak, but I'd like to see some generational talent at running back or on defense.

I root against the Bears, but I like them. Can't say the same about the Vikings or the Lions. The Halas family did an awful lot to keep the Packers on the map in the early years, and recommended Lombardi as a coach when Green Bay was in the NFL wilderness.

I have been to a lot of games at Lambeau. I liked the stadium better before the reno, it had a more hometown vibe. But Green Bay is a great football town. Though the home team sucks eggs! :chuckle:

Agreed there about the stadium. It's more like "Lambeau-land" now compared to the old days.

really curious what the giants do. the fact that they signed 2 qbs already is puzzling enough

I like the Penn State kid a lot. If he were still there and I was the Giants, that would be my choice, for sure.

i think people want Sanders if Hunter isn't available. a qb was the preferred pick all off season but idk if i'm entirely sold on Sanders. he was really good at Colorado but also a bit of a diva because he's already rich, which doesn't mix well in nyc

oh, man...Clay Matthews. Why couldn't they put Jerry Kramer up there first?

Read an article yesterday saying his round of interviews went pretty badly. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he slides aways.

Well, the ESPN announcers came fully prepared to spend the evening talking about Shedeur Sanders.

As expected, Sanders slid out of the first round. He opted out of the green room for a reason. Dion knew he wasn't going to be a top pick and didn't want to see the coverage of him twiddling his thumbs in the green room.

What's important for Sanders is going to the right team. That still may be the Steelers.

Two Super Bowl contending teams picking at bottom of the first round struck gold (IMHO). It’s not so much the players themselves, but how they fit in with teams that are already stacked.

Baltimore drafted Malaki Starks, the best safety in the draft. He’ll play next to Kyle Hamilton. They could have the best safety combination in the league for years to come.

Philadelphia drafted Jihaad Campbell, the best linebacker in the draft. Campbell was viewed as a top 10 prospect by some analysts. For whatever reason, nobody wanted to draft a linebacker in the first round this year, and he fell in the Eagle’s lap. He’ll play next to Zach Baun, who was a finalist for defensive player of the year.

But, in 2004, only three years after 9/11, who would name their child Jihaad? That sort of bugs me…

205,000 is the official attendance in Green Bay for day 1. Surprised it was that high.

Good value for that part of the round. Doesn't have a ton of snaps in his pocket so there's some 'rawness' issues at play, but it's not like they'll be asking him to start from Day 1, either. Great toolbox, for sure.

As to nobody drafting a linebacker ~ At this point in time, inside backer is being viewed as a non-priority position. The first one off the board last year came at pick 45. Personally, I don't agree with that notion, and besides, this kid has the athleticism to also be used off the edge.

Yeah, in Howie’s and Nick’s press conference, they said he’ll play both edge and off-ball linebacker.

In my experience and limited public education there is only one group of people that believe Jihaad is anything but bad.

If someone can give me an example where Jihaad is not about hurting, controlling or decimating anyone without the same views as those that participate or support Jihaad, I’d be open to hear it.

Until then, I’m on your side Krash, it’s not a name I’ve ever heard a child called before and the correlation with time he was named it makes me question many things about the household he was raised in. Hopefully we are wrong and someone can spin Jihaad in a positive way and sway our thinking.

To be born in NJ of all places 3 years after 9/11 and name your son Jihaad is crazy work. They couldn’t yell his name in an airport if they had to. That tells you enough.

He's muslim, born of muslim parents, and given a muslim name. In arabic the name means "to struggle".

While some Americans have a singular and uneducated view of the word, most muslims find it to be a word that describes inner struggles (the struggle with sin and temptation). It wouldn't be a hateful intent to name a child jihad.

I worked in east africa and the middle east for 30 years and never once met anyone who shared your definition of jihad. Americans are right to hate what happened on 911, but conflating that evil with a family naming their kid isn't appropriate.

Must confess, when I said 'slides aways', I wasn't thinking all the way to day three. Not with the way league values QB's. Never seen anything like this happen to a player who has no charges pending or has a serious injury concern. I mean, there were mocks not that long ago that had him going in the top three picks.

think every team is just trying to send a message at this point. wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even get drafted (he will though)

Sanders doesn’t have elite arm strength. He can’t run like Hurts, Jackson, Allen, Daniels, etc. So, right off the bat, his skillset is limited. That said, he does look pretty good on film. He’s an NFL QB (IMHO).

It’s a combination of his attitude and persona. The media circus that comes with the package. Possibly some of the comments his father has made. And then there is the report from an anonymous NFL executive, who said Sanders had the worst interview he has ever seen (which may or may not be true).

I wouldn’t be surprised if a team with a Top-10 QB ended up drafting him in a late round to be a backup. Let him sit behind someone like Allen, Jackson, Burrow, Mahomes, Stafford, or Hurts for a few years. That might be the best thing for him.

Agree with above. Teams don't want another Johnny Manziel or Ryan Leaf. Physical attributes are not the only necessary parts to being a successful NFL starting QB.

I think teams are making individual decisions on Sanders fit to their organization, not that there is some vast NFL conspiracy by owners not to draft him.

It's like Aaron Rodgers--do you want to invite that circus into your organization?

Giants just drafted the running back I wanted the Eagles to get. Cam Skattebo. I was thinking him and Barkley would be a great RB duo.

But now we have to play him twice a year instead.

I'm a firm believer that the QB position has to be a leader of men. Every single person has to have faith in you and follow you into a storm and believe you'll walk out fine. Besides the physical and mental part of being a NFL level QB, you have to have these intangibles to lead a franchise. This is not CU but now multi billion dollar businesses. These players have families that depend on them. Not one single franchise needs a knucklehead at the helm.

I agree with the comparison of drafting Sanders with signing Rodgers. In the same way that signing Rodgers means catering to his every whim and giant ego, drafting Sanders means having Deion tweeting over your shoulder about how you should best use and develop Shadeur. It’s a package deal.

As a Bears fan who has admittedly been owned by the Packers for a long time, I did get some vicarious pleasure seeing the way Rodgers tarnished his legacy with his antics in NY. But I wish Shedeur well.

I understand that entire angle and still agree to disagree. It’s not a common name for a Muslim man living in any western country and for good reason.

I would be shocked if any team with a top 10 QB would want sanders on the bench. That’s a sideshow nobody wants. Steelers should take him if he slides more. Maybe the browns will here.

There were rumors coming out of Philadelphia all day that they wanted Sanders with one of their 5th round picks (they have 3). The Eagles don’t have an established backup QB.

It turns out Cleveland trades up right in front of Philly who had the 145th pick, and then they draft Sanders with the 144th pick.

Go figure.

But why did Cleveland draft Dillion Gabriel last night? Makes no sense.

Trying to apply reason and logic to the Browns is an endless loop.

Glad to finally see Shedeur get drafted.

On one hand, he's got a huge ego, overconfident, and brings a lot of baggage with Deion running his life. But.... he's still a kid and seeing him getting picked so low.... it's got to be a kick to the gut.

But it looks like Cleveland wanted him, and they thought the Eagles might draft him. Otherwise, why trade up for him at that spot.
