Dress Watch for Daily Wear 3940P vs 5160G

I currently own a 3940P. I love it, but I have been recently contemplating an upgrade. A few months back, I had the opportunity to try on a 5160G...and I was blown away. I appreciate that the 3940p is more understated. But the engraving of the 5160G are incredibly elegant and subtle in person.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

To me, the 3940P is perfection and PP at its finest.

You have got one of the best, a timeless classic. There may be Pateks I might consider trading in a 3940P for but the 5160G is certainly not among them.

I don’t own either but have 5140R, which I feel is definitely able to be worn as a daily watch so i can get a sense of 3950. For a daily wear I cannot image 5160 will be more suitable than 3940p. That said I love the new 5160J and am still drooling at its photos.

The 3940 will look pretty flat compared to the 5160G. It is really just what you want. I think the 240Q is easier to tell the time without the confusing retrograde date hand always making me think it is the hour hand.

The 5160g has a nice look, but the user experience design is poor, in my opinion. Messy and hard to read.

3940 is a classic. I’d be hard pressed to let it go.

In person, when I tried on the 5160, the biggest difference was wrist presence. To my untrained eye, the 5160 also appeared as more well-finished / higher calibre time piece.

Again, I love my 3940P. It was my first Patek dress watch. It has served me incredibly well as a relatively understated dress watch for many formal occasions (I say "relatively" because, IMO, a Patek is never really understated). I am very hesitant to part with it...
But I just cannot justify having both a 5160G and a 3940P

You have a very fine Patek, a very nice watch, technically and in terms of style. However, our tests change and/or we discover other watchmaking areas that can make us move from a watch, a brand, a complication, a style to the other. Some will like understated, western subtle style but time have changed and new cultural profiles come into watches with different needs and preferences. It was the same in the 1990's when style moved on from those "vintage" watches how we call them today (32-36mm, hesalite, proportions...). And I don't talk about the arrival of the Nautilus in 1976.

Hence, if you feel you are attracted by something else, it won't be the last time, believe me. The question, reagarding my own experience, is whether it is a short-lived feeling or something that will last. The only solution I found is that I usually spend several months thinking about it, coming back to an AD to try it before buying it. Then, I know if it's a 1-month love that evaporates or something I'm really bonding with.

The 5160 is great (though I only handeled a5159G in the metal). The proportions are very different from what I was used to (38mm wide for 11.8mm thick). But it's a one-of-a-kind type of watch that is definitely worth considering. If in the future, you feel like changing, you can sell it as many of us do.
