Sweeping Seconds

I know the Daytona is the grail of Rolex loyalists. Growing up admiring fine time pieces, the one thing I loved about a Rolex was a sweeping hand. As much as I’d love a Daytona, I feel I’d miss that sweep. I miss it on my BB Chrono and can’t imagine owning a Rolex without it.

Thoughts?

I'm experiencing the same exact conundrum. I own a kermit and one of the things I enjoy the most is watch the seconds hand rotate. I think I'll own a Daytona one day for special occasions, but wear a sub daily.

Ditto. I need the sweeping third hand and a date. or it is a deal breaker no matter the hype around the watch. That said the Daytona is a beautiful watch

Love the sweep. That’s the downside of a chrono unless you just let the center seconds hand run continuously.

With a vertical clutch column wheel chrono engagement, there is no harm to let the central chronograph hand sweep all the time. Of course there is also the small seconds hand that sweeps all the time on the Daytona as well at the 6 o’clock position. That means you can watch two parallel sweeps at once.

Get a spring drive Seiko, much smoother sweep!

I wouldn't go as far as calling the Daytona the "grail of Rolex loyalists".
Its certainly desirable but don't let the hype make you buy something you don't really want

I disagree.

Since there is hype I feel the OP is powerless to resist and should get a white dial stainless steel Daytona.

For the longest time I felt the same way. But when I finally did get my Daytona it turned out I didn’t really miss the sweep seconds that much at all. Now I don’t even think about it. I do miss having a date when I wear the Daytona though.

The small seconds hand is always in motion providing movement to the dial. More than adequate.

I apologies, I don't know what came over me. Yes, Panda, Kermit, Celebration..

Don't get me wrong, all great, just hate to see the desire of others to influence someone so heavily. OP is talks about about what he loves and it seems like the hype is driving him to make compromises he really don't wanna make.

I get the struggle, GL OP

I get what you are saying about the second hand as for the Daytona being the grail definitely the vintage ones but for me the newer ones maybe a little less

The seconds hand at the 6 O clock subdial appears to sweep even smoother given it's smaller size ;)

Daytona has best of both.
Let it run or simply pause and reset.

Well its true today many buy the hype to wear it,and the Daytona must be one of the most hyped watches ever but hype sells watches today and drive the prices up. Cannot see the point in having the large seconds hand running when you got it on the seconds on the sub dials that's when a chronograph for. But with the large second hand running you will do no harm but might lose a few hours power reserve.

You can speak for yourself but I wouldn't try to speak for everyone else.

Just let the centre hand run continuously. Problem solved.

Seiko Hi-Beat (36,000bph) automatic movements are smoother-sweeping than any Rolex, and have been since 1967.

Just keep the chrono hand on 24/7. I did that with al my daytona’s and worked great.

Yep much prefer a sweeping seconds hand around the entire dial, but with a circle of lume too.

Great watch. Just let the center second hand run.
