I can take my watch to the engravers and have anything put on it, to me a 116500 is a really nice watch, but that’s it, to me it is nothing special, hard to have got from an AD easy to get grey market ..
Again, missing the point, my dude

Tom's 116500 ain't no normal 116500, even if it is "just" an engraving. It's what it represents:
- Won as a result of winning the Le Mans/Daytona 24hr, hardly a walk in the park
- Presented by Rolex CEO himself
- Owned by none-other than 9-time Le Mans 24hr Champion Tom Kristensen, the most successful Le Mans racer of all time... and yes, he has 9 of em....

Yes the watch is "just" a 116500LN.... but it's not "just" a 116500LN, in the same way that Paul Newman's Daytona isn't "just" a 6239.

Yes someone could get theirs engraved with "Rolex 24hrs Daytona" on it... but it would just be a 116500LN that a chump got engraved to pretend it's something it's not. Provenance is key.

Don’t agree - he got given it .. right there, given to him, he didn’t win the races wearing it, Paul Newman is one of the OG Daytonas so will always have that presence plus the man himself, fine your opinion is it’s special ok I’m not trying to change your mind or justify your chain of that, but for me the two do not compare .. to me that is ..

I mean... ok, but Paul got given his 6239 too, and didn't win any races wearing it...

But...

what about this one:

Is this just a boring old Zenith 16520?
I'm guessing the guy who paid $1.14M for it doesn't think so! haha

Thanks all for the discussion, very interesting points of view.
For Tom Kristensen I am sure they all are very special and unique, well earned also. I would also say for me it’s rather unique and would be valued higher than an off the shelf Rolex, just because of the connection to him and the occasion that he earned it.
But anyway we all have views.

Crazy thing is he left it in his changing room locker, clearly number 29.

Has nothing to do with winning races, it’s a modern day Daytona we all have one woppeee .. had engraving you’ll never see big deal ..
Paul Newman is a legend, I’m not sure who you’re trying to convince ?
His wife gave it to him, the meaning was him to stay safe, small amount of engraving, given in love, or a 116500 loads on here have .. who has a Newman Daytona ? How many of this forum has his reference .. ?

Engraving only on the black version in Le Mans.

I can have a gold medal engraved at my trophy shop that but that don’t make me an Olympic champion. It’s the provenance not the item that makes it valuable. It’s an award with all the meaning and significance behind a trophy that gives it its value and not the actual $142.00 cost of the trophy.

When you win a watch from Rolex, it is a very big deal and it becomes extremely special and not pedestrian.

Have I won an engraved Daytona ? If yes I’d prefer the white dial version ..
