Rough Winding GMT

I got my 1958 GMT back from "clean and calibrate" today.

The watch came out of the box with something I had never noticed . . . a problem with winding it. I wanted to wind it 20 times before putting it on. When turning the stem in the "winding" direction it cycles between a "skipping or slipping" feeling to a fairly resistant binding. I've had the watch forty-something years and this is a first.

The jewelry store owner, whom I have no reason to distrust, tells me that they have seen this occur in older watches before.

Any thoughts?

I think it doesn't sound right. Winding should be smooth if all components are well lubricated. If it is not smooth, there is some resistance somewhere which could lead to abnormal wear and tear. I would have it rechecked at the earliest.

My thoughts would be that the Jewelry store did not use a Rolex trained watchmaker who did not replaced any worn or damaged parts..

However, a 1958 GMT is an old time-piece, and although it is not rocket science, if it doesn't feel right, or at least similar to what it was to begin with, then it should be looked into before further damage is done.

I would definately have it looked at by another watchmaker.
It can be as simple as a loose crown wheel screw, but even then you could do damage if not corrected.
Keep us posted please.

Added To The Mix . . .

I started tracking the watch for accuracy yesterday at 1500 . . . it has since gained in excess of eleven (11) minutes.

Tools is right, I think. I don't think the tech was Rolex-trained. I'll address that when I visit with the store owner.

I'll try to find this THREAD when this gets resolved. The good Lord knows I hate confrontation, but . . .

As Of Today

I sent my GMT back to the jeweler. He sent it to Rolex. Rolex sent it back because they no longer stock the parts to repair it. (1958 model). So . . .

This watch and I have been together a long time. Do any of you know/Can you recommend a watchmaker who is skilled, reputable, and trustworthy to whom I can send it?

Many thanks,
RD

Had the same problem with my vintage Tudor Sub. My watchmaker told me he had to replace the winding gear.
Good luck,

I would send it to Bob Ridley at watchmakers International. He is a master for vintage Rolex. =) maverick
