Rolex vintage noob.... how did I do?

Bought a 1969/70 "Red Sub" ref. 1680 Mark II/III. Purchased from first owner who impeccably maintained the watch and kept all original box and papers and tags. He purchased in November of 71 from a very reputable store around the corner from where I live and he lived just a few blocks down from me when he purchased. Original bezel in impeccable condition. Pressure test was recently completed and watch was fully serviced by a local company who I have done a lot of business with.

I put a 93150 bracelet on it with 593 endlinks.

All in I'm sitting at 18.2k. First Rolex.

Sounds like you scored a good deal. Detailed pictures of dial, case , bezel, will tell the story.

Anybody can attach an image using the paper clip icon. Uploaded images must meet the file and image size requirements of the file type used.

Nice one but quite a few of the parts have been replaced. Looks like Mark II dial in good condition though.

- bezel insert definitely replaced for later / service
- crown is later too - maybe 703
- the plexi crystal looks aftermarket to me. The date mag too weak

can't comment on the hands but could be original

Rolex vintage noob.... how did I do?

The hands do seem different but not such a big deal to me - the originals may have started sluffing off lume over 50 years.

I'm not value focused but did you buy it "head only" and then source bracelet/endlinks?

If so what's the 93150 clasp code?

No I bought it with the riveted end bracelet and the bought the 93150 for daily wear. Agree on the hands and the crown and "crystal". Bracelet says "V9" on it.

And the bezel insert. Did he mention it had been changed at a service? Or any records of that? It might reveal what else was changed.

I read somewhere lately, that due to inflation a picture is now only worth 200 words. Lol

I like the watch, the insert sticks out,at this age it's not uncommon for the crystal and crown to be replaced. A red sub is special, wear it be proud of it.

No there is no documentation of any other service. Every paper is in the box but nothing on changes to the original. I believe the crown is probably changed... likely the crystal. I could see the bezel not being original.

Thanks, Chris - first and probably only rolex ever. Figured a red sub would be a good spot to be for the next 50 years lol

How can you tell it is Mark II?

I believe 580 endlinks are the correct version for a 1680 with a 93150 bracelet.

the plexi looks like an after market as the cyclops magnifying is off.
You can look for original plexi T127 to replace it. But do note that most of the original T127 out there are the service type. The original T127 is pretty rare and cost more.
You can refer here to note the difference:
