Comex Sub
Anyone know much about the Comex? Thought they were all like a normal Sub with "Comex" on the dial, but recently seen one with yellow markers and hands and a slightly different looking bezel, that looked fantastic.

Here is one for sale at present in Hong Kong. The price with box and documents is around US$200,000. It is a 5514, and has the gas escape valve, which ordinary 5513 general issue no-date Submariners do not have.

Here are some good sites for you to learn more about the Comex Subs and SD's:
www.doubleredseadweller and this article. Bear in mind that there are a LOT of counterfeit "Comex" Rolex watches out there, so always be sure to buy from a reliable seller and preferably get a Comex Rolex with papers.

Would appear that the one I seen is likely a fake then with the yellow hands and hour markers. Would post a pic up but photobucket is down for maintenance just now

Not necessarily. If the Comex Rolex you saw has Tritium hands and dial, it is very likely that the Tritium markers have discoloured with age. See the article about "Rolex Lume" in the "Rolex Reference Library" section in the main forums' overview.

Question: The tube on the watch in this pic has a rubber seal. When new, my ca. 5513 did not have such a tube-and-seal. Mine was fitted with that tube-and-seal when it was serviced in 1989.
What's up with that 5514? Is it OEM and period correct, or has it been worked on? |

At last photobucket is working again. Here is a pic of the one I seen recently. I really like it, but unsure of its authenticity.

Exactly..The earliest COMEX Subs were ~1970 5513's and all had crown guards.

I actually like the dial and yellow hands, but it was the bezel that didn't look right straight away, that why I started asking questions. Never even noticed it didn't have crown guards oops

My sub has that same bezel--isn't it cool? The dealer I bought it from charged me extra because it's the limited edition with minute markers all the way around.

There's a listing in this month's IW magazine for a Sotheby's auction and the price fetched for a Comex was around USD500,000.00

I only know what I posted about the watch, but if your 5513 had the seal upgrade on the tube, then I would be pretty confident that when the Comex 5514 was serviced the tube would have been similarly upgraded to have the rubber seal added..

I think the difference in tubes observed is due to RSC upgrading watches from twinlock to triplock. Lots of older subs which were originally fitted with the twinlock system were systematically "upgraded" when serviced. My 5513 from 1967 is one such case.
Another way to spot this is by looking at the coronet on the winding crown. Triplocks have 3 dots under the coronet. Twinlocks usually have a straight line like a "-" symbol. |

Thanks.
I quite agree and I didn't mean to imply anything aside from the fact that the pic in question may not be a Comex in it's original issue condition. Which raises one last question: Is a 5514 nothing other than a 5513 with "Comex" printed on the dial? Quote:

Thanks for the link. It fills in all the Comex details perfectly.

The 5514 does have the helium escape valve on the side of the case as per Sea-Dwellers.

The 5513 came first with the experimental HEV's, then Rolex specifically made the 5514 for Comex ONLY. John. |
