HELP! Is my Yacht-Master 1662 FAKE?
I recently bought a used YM. I didn't buy it with box or papers, but what immediately alerted me that my watch may be fake was that as I was wearing it one of the pins on the strap fell out. However, I believe that this YM is at least 10 years old as it doesn't have the ROLEX engraving inside the wall of the case adjacent to the dial.
I have looked up authenticity indicators exhaustively the past day and I plan on taking it to a jeweler (for the first time btw) to authenticate it. However, I would like to be as knowledgeable as possible and would appreciate your input. I have enclosed a couple of pictures, a few things I have noticed.... 1. there is an engraved-crown at the 6 o'clock position. 2. the movement is smooth of the second-hand 3. the date is magnified within the Cyclops 4. the date-adjust does work instantly a few minutes after setting the clock post 24 hours later (according to Hodinkee this may indicate it just needs some servicing) 5. the pins holding the strap together are threaded; I found this out after locating the missing pin. .....PLEASE let me know of any other pictures I can post that may indicate its authenticity! Thank You! |

Well it depends on the quality of the laser etched crown.. some fakes have that. Also, you need to take as many pictures as you can so others can help you

Just by those 2 images I have serious doubts about authenticity. You need to post better pics, include bracelet clasp, better dial pics.

Can’t comment on the watch’s overall authenticity, but I’ve had the screw start to come out on the bracelet of a couple of different rolexes purchased from ADs. I think that can just be an indication of a lack of loctite.

Yeah...like others have said, those pics are not going to help us determine authenticity.
Bracelet screws come out on authentic Rolexes, so that by itself is not a cause for concern. I've had it happen a couple of times over the years. |

7. The Hour indicators also glow very blue in complete darkness if adequately exposed to light beforehand 8. There are also engravings inside the clasp that are very hard to photograph. Easiest way to determine this is posting a photo of the clasp, cyclops, text on dial and verify how does it feel (weight and finish quality).

I think your best bet is to take it into a local watchmaker who knows Rolex or take it into an AD to verify, seems to be the easiest thing.

Thanks for your input! I am glad to know that a pin falling out isn't necessarily a dealbreaker!
I am going to take it to a luxury watch dealer in the next hour. Are there any questions or talking-points I should bring up with him regarding the YM? ALSO ANY PICTURES YOU WANT ....I WILL POST...BUT YA GOTTA LET ME KNOW! |

Bezel finishing looks suspect in the last picture...not sure. Numbers appear to be raised higher than normal but could be the angle.
Have it checked out and let us know. |

I'll admit, when Mon asked for a picture of the movement and he posted this, I almost spit my drink all over my computer.
With that being said, clearly he isn't a WIS and certainly is loaded with anxiety. He was obviously taken, prob for something around $5-$6k when he thought he was getting a deal. If it was a wire scam, I wouldn't say anything outside of my typical advice, you need to do your DD. In this case, he did put it on his CC, so outside of aggravation, he should be okay. Hopefully, also a lesson learned for the OP and anyone else buying from a shady source. |

EDIT: I'm gonna put off going to the jeweler until I get more feedback from you guys. Want to make sure I go in fully-informed aside from web-surfing for sources (most are very very basic as well and don't indicate the level of skill that counterfeiters have nowadays.

The watch is fake. Just compared it to an image of a genuine one. There are many things wrong with this piece.

Your pics are not the best and I got some doubts and I think it is a fake.
They say buy the seller and not the watch. Why are you having doubts it could be fake? Where did you buy the watch?

No need to explain details to the OP. All he has to do is compare the watch to one from a seller here on the forum or an image on the net and the differences are perfectly clear.
