Allow myself to introduce...uh-hmm... myself
Found this site while doing some research on a purchase and decided to join. Great place you have here with an amazing level of expertise and a friendly willingness to share that with others.
I live on the left coast. Lots of short sleeve weather, which of course means a fine watch is a must. Back in the mid 90's I decided to buy myself a first Rolex to represent a milestone in my business. I was telling a good friend of mine this and out of the blue she says "Well, I should get it for you." I asked her what on earth she has to do with Rolex watches and she says, "My dad is an AD back east." The net result was I got the "immediate family" discount on a 16610 (a T<25 with lug holes), paying basically AD cost and the shipping. Talk about kismet. As a side note, I just got the watch back from service and it is +2 seconds for the week it's been back. Of course, it also looks brand new again (sans lume). The reason I had the watch serviced is I decided it would really be the perfect gift to give my son for college graduation. I wouldn't have wanted to buy him a pre-owned for such an occasion, but I know it would be special to him if I give him this watch. He's been eyeing it since he was a little boy. I think you guys probably know where this story is headed. This gift will, of course, leave me without a Rolex and this I cannot abide. After doing a lot of reading on here I've been corrupted and decided I really need two watches. You heard that right - NEED. Right now it's looking like a SS SubC and a TT GMTc. My thought process is this - First off, I can't imagine not having a Sub. Second, I've been wanting a TT for some time. I much prefer brushed center links so the logical choice for the SS watch is the Sub. Besides, to me the SS Sub is like the navy blue suit in a man's wardrobe - no matter how many suits you have, you must have a navy blue one. Since the GMT comes with PCL's in any event, I figured that would be the better candidate for the TT. Also, though both are tool watches it seems to me the nature and function of the GMT lends itself a little more to being dressed up a bit. Plus as I previously mentioned, if I get a TT Sub then I would still need a SS one (lol). I'd rather have two different watches. Once again, thanks for all the help and info you guys have already given me. Hopefully I can contribute what little I know and in that way perhaps pay it forward to others on here. |

Welcome and great idea for your son's gift. You did not even need any enabling from us!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I think I'm going to like it here.

Appreciate the nice comments about my gift idea. He likes watches and is one of perhaps a dwindling number of young people who wears them. He's always loved my Date Sub. Even when he was little he would say things like "Daddy has James Bond's watch!" I'd actually thought of simply getting him a brand new one but my wife made a good point - he's got graduate school still to go and this is a kid who's gone through 3 i-phones in the last year and a half, lol! I know he would appreciate and be careful with the Sub though. Since it's attached to his wrist it's not the kind of thing that gets laid down all the time and left behind. Thanks again for welcoming me to the neighborhood! |
