Alternative FAQ

Q. Why are Rolex S.A. so successful in selling watches?
A. Because the founder was a very clever businessman who had a huge talent in understanding what the public wanted. In fact, one could call Rolex the best example of brilliant advertising of all times. The watches, although very well constructed, are noting special. No complications, no intricate manual assembly and no special finish of the movements. In fact, the founder was nor a watchmaker, nor Swiss.

Q. If I buy a Rolex, do I buy a hot air balloon?
A. If you buy a fake, yes. If you buy the real deal, no. But this all depends on your own perception of what is important. Rolex have become a class of it’s own but with some treats that still puzzle me. However, this all can be traced back to the founder’s philosophy. If the public wants diamond encrusted platinum Super Presidents because they are expensive, they give the public those very ‘bling’ watches which I hate so much.

Q. I am an amateur diver, should I buy a Submariner?
A. Yes, but only if you have a ‘thing’ going on for Rolex. Otherwise, buy a Citizen Pro Master and a decent dive computer and spend the rest of the money on other diving gear or a nice present for your spouse. (To soften her or him up for your Sub purchase).

Q. My colleagues think my Rolex is a fake, what can I do to convince them it is not?
A. Bet your month’s wages that it is real because you can prove it. That is what I did. (Actually, just bet 200 bucks because the other guy backed off right away. I could have made a nice tip then!).

Q. Why should I buy a Rolex anyway, there are so many fine watches nowadays?
A. Why are you on this forum then? Just kidding. This question is almost impossible to answer. Why a BMW and not a Mercedes? Why an Omas and not a Montblanc? Well, Rolexes are sturdy and dependable. They can be serviced all around the world. They keep their value pretty well. But it is your choice. You either love them or hate them.

Q. Why are Rolexes so expensive and become more expensive every year?
A. As long as there are waiting lists for Rolexes, this will remain. (Clever marketing, remember?).

Q. What is the most beautiful Rolex?
A. The current Submariner Date, with the Sea-Dweller a good second.

Disclaimer: all answers are derived from the author’s biased opinion about Rolex watches. And the fact that he is opening his fourth can of Heineken.

Take care,

Frans.
