Best complementary Rolex to an Explorer 1?

I have an Explorer 1 and absolutely love it. However I am toying with the idea of eventually adding a 2nd Rolex. Just not sure which one.

I am thinking of maybe a White Dial OP (36 or 39) or a blue face DJ. Or something else?

Interested to hear/see ideas from other members here. Thanks.

I'm in a similar situation, love my Explorer also! I'm going to get a BLNR or an LV. The color/date will add nice diversity to the Explorer.

I added a 5 digit gmt master 2 after my explorer. It really depends on what you definition of what "complementary" means

did you want something for a dressier occasion? — then OP or DJ
did you want something for more sporty? — sub
did you want something to sporty and good for travel? — gmt master 2
did you want a white dial rolex? — exp polar, daytonaC,

I would avoid OP or Milgauss since they are time only like the explorer. I would probably go datejust cause I love that watch, but a sub, explorer 2, or GMT master II would be great too. If you don't like dates on watches, disregard, but many people find them to be one of the most useful complications so I'd be looking for that.

I think these compliment it well. Would like to add an Ex II polar.

Something with a rotating bezel — sub or GMT.

I would suggest the following:
- Milgauss - really interesting colors available (never liked the Rolex sig. cyclops - fugly)
- Explorer II Polar
- GMT Master (diff. colors)
- Sub (diff. colors like the Hulk).

Liking a watch is very subjective. Take a look at the different models and choose the one that sticks out to you. I currently own a SubC-ND and will add an ExpII Polar 16570 and Air King 116900.

Cheers!

Datejust - you need something a little dressy.

As others have said, I’d avoid the OP - it’s very similar to the Exp1...

Sub would be a good addition, but shares some similar characteristics to the Exp1. A Batman or Pepsi would also be good options if you want something with a bezel. If you want something of a similar ilk to what you have now, then a Polar Exp2 would be a great choice

Fluted bezel DJ or DD for the dressy aspect
Personally love the WG DD40. Class in every aspect

Get something different like a submariner, GMT master, etc.

Adding another time only piece would be redundant.

I'd go with the Oyster Perpetual 36mm white dial for a few of reasons.

First the Oyster Perpetual is the legacy of the Mount Everest expedition. It was an Oyster Perpetual which was used. So if you want a watch that is the modern version of Hillary's watch, the closest thing would be the Oyster Perpetual.

The second reason is that the 36mm watch has double indicies at 3-6-9. These are not only beautiful in the way they reflect light, but are also consistent with the 1950 Oyster Perpetuals which mostly had twin indicies.

The third reason is that you get a $5000 watch that has the same quality as the other higher priced watches.

The fourth reason is you don't have a date and so you don't have a cyclops.

I think this watch is one of the finest that Rolex makes for a variety of reasons.

Doesn’t get much better than that.

If you were to add a third, I would go BB58
And after that a dress watch on leather.

But if they were your only two I think it’s a fantastic pair.

Thank you, more or less in that line are the other watches in my collection: Breguet Marine 5817 and Patek 5196

Agree on the Patek, I guess if you already own an Explorer, no need to look for another Rolex, great everlasting dress watch such as the Calatrava is the way to go.

I only have one watch, an explorer, currently saving for the Calatrava

Cheers

Hey! I own an OP36 white dial and absolutely love it. But to complement an Explorer, I would go for a DJ. Then you'd have a beautiful clean no-date dial, plus an iconic cyclops (with the practicality of a date complication).
