Breitling SS Seawolf Crown tube - worried
Hello all,
I've owned my seawolf fro 4 years, and love it. But am worried as the crown tube is not replicable with service, it would require a new case. My crown feels fine, but as the watch ages i'm getting worried... is there any other fixes if in 15 years breitling doesn't have a replacement case, and I need a crown tube fixed? Am I worrying for nothing? The watch has sentimental value, and I just want to make sure it will last a lifetime. _DSC2515 by Joseph Jeram, on Flickr |

I'm by no means a watchmaker but would be shocked if Breitling (or any watch company for that matter) designed something this way. As you know with most others (if not all) it can be replaced at service time. The watchmaker can tread a new one in. That seems to be part of a standard service for many (with Omega for the Chronograph pushers as well). So I'm hoping this is the case and you're worried for nothing. Some Breitling experts should be around soon to confirm

Taken from a 2012 post:
"i have e-mailed breitling USA and they informed me that all breitling in the aeromarine series have crown tube to be integral to the middle case not a separate(replaceable)one that can be replaced separately if damaged and will need a middle case replacement. " and "The only aeoromarine model that was ever fitted with a replaceable crown tube was the Chrono Avenger. " this is why im worried. |

Wow... Yeah, I can completely understand why you would be worried. If that is the case it (in my opinion) ruins an otherwise awesome watch. It can still be done at service if that is indeed the case but will be a lot more costly which is a shame not to mention a bit silly to me.

That is the main reason that kept me away from buying the seawolf although it is my favorite breitling watch.
Unfortunately design flaw from breitling I think you have to be care using the crown to avoid stripping the crown tube threads. |

Great reason to use a wind-up box. I doubt you will wear the crown out unless you are constantly winding and unwinding the threads. I wouldn't get too hyper critical over the topic. Wear it and enjoy it.

That's very strange for Breitling to design the case without a replaceable crown tube.

Does the 1-pece case and crown tube only for Avenger models? What about super ocean or steel fish?

The crown is part of the mid case of the watch.
A stripped crown requires a complete service. The Titanium version of this watch was notorious for stripping crowns. I had one fixed and it stripped again a couple of years later. They were junk. The SS crown is much better, so I wouldnt expect you to have a problem. |

I wouldn't worry. Whenever I need to unscrew mine, I am amazed how strong and robust my crown feels. It is always easy to screw it in. It always catches on the first try and it has yet to feel like it is about to cross-thread. Rock solid!
I would not be surprised if Breitling were to use a softer steel on the crown pin, so that it would not damage the crown tube in case of crow-threading. Then all that would need to be replaced is the pin. <---- Just thinking out loud. |

I know that we have to be careful while using the screw crown of any watch But after say 15 years of continuous usage and when i send the seawolf for complete overhaul, the threads of the tube will have been worn out and the should be replaced , as rolex do with the complete overhaul, rolex changes the crown tube of my fathers 20 yrs old seadweller while he was making a complete service to the watch ,although he had not have any complaints with the crown tube but rolex told him that it is a basic routine at the overall is to change the tube with a new one , so what will be the scenario with the seawolf after a lifetime time of 20 years ?
