I unsticked my sd4k... 7years later
Hi !
Bought my bnib 116600 in late 2017, officially to get a financial reserve... But i knew that i would wear it. Done, sold Kermit, and proudly present my new, just unsticked, 116600 - the most beautiful sport Rolex ever made :

Nice!
Glad to hear that you decided to wear it! All watches should be worn, just like all sports cars should be driven.

Spectacular watch!
I owned a 1665 Sea-Dweller but it never quite worked on my wrist. I really want a 116600, but not without trying it on, first. But the odds seem against finding one in a store, which stinks. So I'll just enjoy it in photos. Enjoy your Sea-Dweller in good health for many, many years! |

My first SD was a 16600 M that I bought new.
I sold it, still regret it till this day. I bought a 116600 within a few weeks of their release. Still one of my favorite watches! I just got it back from it's first service at Dallas RSC (no polish) Here it is with my first Rolex a 16220. I rarely wear the 16220 but will never sell it as it was my first. They went to the Dallas Spa together.

Financial reserve? I don’t get it. I’ve never bought a watch as an investment. Glad you finally decided to wear it.

Have to agree Kat just cannot understand why buy any watch if you are not going to wear it straight away, but Rolex watches have become just ££$$€€ objects to some.

However, we are very aware that if we fell on hard times we could sell our Rolex watches and this would allow us to keep our heads above water. So in that respect our small Rolex collection could be construed as a financial reserve. Buy and keep unworn to hand it on the next generation I can understand but what don't understand is buying a watch, not wearing it for many many years only to then open it and wear it, this to me seems to undermine the logic of keeping it unworn, why not just enjoy it from day1?

Maybe his plan was to not wear it from the start and he then changed his mind. The beauty is, we don't need to understand what others choose to do with their belongings / money. I know someone who buys rare comics. Some he hasn't turned a single page on. Lets face it, his plan would have worked. If he had needed to sell the watch he would have made a good return so his initial plan was a success. My guess, he didn't need the cash so decided to wear and enjoy it. A change from his original plan, which was sound logic given his potential return on the initial investment. |

I will never understand people who buy watches as a form of investment, but as you say each to their own.

Congrats! I think the SD4K is the best looking ceramic Sub/ SD. The slimmer lugs compared to SubC, the fully graduated bezel and matte dial make it very unique.

Congratulations for popping its cherry! Great looking piece.
Funny, I'm about to do the exact same thing with my SD43 7 years later, for my 50th b'day in a couple of months, ha ha! |

Thank you for your answers !
I bought it because i liked it AND because it could double in price in a few years. Which it did. That is the beauty with FREEDOM (haters, do you know what it is ? Free market, liberty ?) : you can buy something just to hold it. Sell it. Or like i did, finally wear it. Or change your mind inbetween. If you cannot buy a Rolex, it is because offer does not meet demand. So market adapts. Price increases. Not my fault ! I come from France, where you are evil if you're a libertarian, if you wear a nice watch and can get your car scratched because it is a Mazda convertible. Beware, if you wish more leftist control, you could get (like we had) restrictions of liberty. I got run after by cops just because i was the feet in a lake during Covid. Now I moved to Switzerland. I can assure you, freedom and free markets, liberty to buy, keep or sell, are better than controlled regimes. Let's celebrate liberty. Let's celebrate the beauty of these professional watches. Of engineering. Of this beautifully balanced 116600. Cheers from Valais, Switzerland! Ps : the cops did not run faster than me. Practice running, it will save you one day.

I'm on the Padi/Kat side in general here but if you were to wait for an auspicious number, so to say, wouldn't opening your 43 at 43 work?

Precisely the reason the market is like it is and why the layman can't get the milestone piece he's had his eye on for 30 years.......Greed

Thing is I wanted to keep it new for a while. I had several other watches worn on rotation, including a Speedy 44 bought the same year. I added other significant watches afterward (TT Sub, VC) and didn’t feel the immediate need to take the SD out of the safe, other than to contemplate it, wind it up it every 3 months and check out its accuracy. This watch felt special to me from day 1, and I gradually came to realise I could wait till the age of 50 before I start wearing it. Mark the milestone properly and give the watch more significance to me. So there you go, bought on my 43rd to celebrate my 50th ! PD: sorry OP, didn’t mean to hijack your thread! |
