Would you trade

I have an opportunity to buy a Two Tone Champagne dialled 126503 Daytona.

Will need to sell a watch and considering selling my 226579 Black dialled Explorer 2.

I will need to add circa £10k to transaction. (Roughly the MSRP difference- so I don’t mind.)

Would the forum do trade? Is the Daytona a significantly better watch / more desirable piece?

Is the two tone a no?

Personally love the Explorer 2 but feel a Daytona is the reference Rolex and I have never owned one. I also know I will not get a sniff of a Stainless Steel from an AD.

Thanks for feedback

Do you like the watch and the rest is history, is there any sentimental art helmet to the watch job are looking to trade. Value is genuinely irrelevant question my first while gold meteorite daytona cost me less then my current stainless daytona. Buy with your heart because at least you will enjoy wearing it,

If you’ll enjoy it more/you like better than the Exp, then it’s a great trade for you. Thats what matters, forget the rest.
It’s nice to get opinions from the group, I get it…but the “popularity” of the watch doesn’t matter, you need to be happier with the Daytona vs the Exp at the end of the day.
Neither will give you any significant $$ ROI, get what you like to look at on your wrist.

Personally, I would not trade a watch I love for what I consider to be a "reference Rolex".

Would normally prefer Daytona but in this instance the black dialed Explorer II is imho more attractive than that two tone… personal preference.

I am not a fan of two tone so it’s a hard no for me.

If you had to ask this question, it’s definitely a no.
A TT watch has to be something you put on the wrist and love immediately or put back on the counter.

Edit: Having said that, a TT Daytona would look killer on a leather strap.

How about asking yourself the question? How comfortable would you be wearing the TT Daytona? How much wrist time will the new watch get? How happy would you feel wearing a £24k watch? These awswers are all personal to you, if all is positive then you have your answer. Good luck.

It will be my daily wearer. Work in a professional office, wear a suit. Have a IWC mark when I need to be self conscious about what is in my wrist

Thanks

When you say "desirable" does that mean for you or for the watch community as a whole? If the first, go ahead and do it. If not, I'm in the get what you want camp, not what you think is the more sought after watch.

I'm not a huge Explorer fan so for me, I'd do the trade.

Don’t trade away a watch that you love for a watch that you have to seek justification for. The black 226570 is the perfect iteration of the Explorer. A two-tone Daytona is a cliche.

Sounds like you prefer SS. So, you should not do the trade.

I would go for Daytona, it’s a totally new level

Explorer 2 is a mediocre model, nothing special, random tool watch

Most people don't like TT watches but I do. I love my TT Datejust, TT GMT (CHNR) and TT YM. If I didn't already have SS Daytona and PM Daytona, I would go for TT Daytona too.

Don't go by the popularity, you should go for the one that sing to you the most.

I have a watch collecting philosophy that when one comes in…. One must go out.

This keeps my financial exposure in check and in theory improves the quality of my collection.

I work in finance and whilst I indulge myself - I keep a check on it.

The means when I make a trade - that the one coming in needs to be better than the one going out.

I also believe you have to have experiences in life and I have been lucky to own some lovely watches that have moved on. (Royal Oak 14080, VC Overseas Chrono) being two examples.

(Over time I have sold pieces against this philosophy to finance other things in life.)

I can’t wear more than one watch and a collection of 6 pieces is enough to rotate.

Some watches that won’t be sold (my father’s Datejust, a seamaster which I have “gifted” to my son and an IWC my wife bought me).

I also have two Pateks (a 70s Calatrava and a 5009) which are the cornerstone of my collecting and which I don’t want to sell.

Which means that if the Daytona comes in… I can only sell the Explorer.

Yes I love it. But I don’t have a Chrono, I am in to cars and the Daytona has that racing connection and lastly it is an experience which if I was under pressure financially I could realise most of my money back…

Do I like it more than the Explorer? I think I like it as the next step on my journey.

I wouldn’t do it but I love the Exp II and I don’t really like the Daytona. You stated you also love the Explorer II so I’d keep it. If you REALLY want a Daytona maybe just add it since you did say you gifted the Omega to your son anyway so technically you are down to five.

I would not do the trade. I get the Daytona, in all configurations, and it is a huge flex watch but that is where it stops for me. The Explorer II is a great watch and one that can be worn everyday for every situation and work perfectly without causing unwanted attention. If a chronograph is what you want then keep the Explorer II and add an Omega Speedmaster, any generation, or a Tudor Chronograph for a fraction of the cost. I could have a long discussion about the comparison between the Daytona and those watches and the only thing the Daytona would win in would be availability and cost. You can do better than a TT Daytona without even trying hard. Better is a subjective term but you know what I mean. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
