Steinhart Ocean 39 Gilt Explorer Dial Review

Hi everyone, happy holidays, I had a chance to check out a unique new Steinhart Ocean 39 with vintage inspired gilt explorer dial and gilt handset.

I know, homages are always controversial. However, I think this watch provides a great looking watch that's not being offered by Rolex or Tudor at a price that is affordable to many. It is also well made and features an ETA elaboré grade 2824-2 movement, 316L stainless construction, sapphire crystal, etc.

It looks great, and likely good for a gift if not personal wear. The video comments area shows "loading" and never loads.

The watch does look nice, but with so much borrowed optical DNA it should - a mismash between vintage explorer and a sub.

Despite the banana case profile these are excellent value for the money and offer a chance to experience styles from our childhood

They are an excellent value for money! I have the 39mm GMT and I feel that it's an homage to the Rolex 5-digit reference, rather than the current 6-digit references. They're reliable and keep excellent time, too!

I recently bought the Steinhart 39 Explorer. I needed a good beater since my 20 year old Swiss Army watch has seen its' better days.

So far, I am very happy with it. It keeps great time, and looks good.

I own a Steinhart Ocean One Premium Blue and have been very happy with it. The 2892 movement is great to look at, especially considering the price point. Runs well within COSC too. :)

Just received a Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer. This sapphire crystal version appears to have excellent AR qualities. The ETA 2824 -2 Elabore movement is tough and reliable. Keeping COSC tolerances.
Lug holes and 39mm make this a vintage 5513 classy homage watch. One of the best values out there for a balanced vintage Swiss watch. Rolex DID make a 5513 Submariner with the Explorer dial in the 1960s, so Steinhart did their homework-and changed their earlier ST-5 in house to an ETA proven 25 jewel work horse.
Gilt dial and old school hands show Steinhart did their research and even provided an extra NATO band for those drilled lugs. Montres value.

To provide a postscript after 3 years:
I have found another 39 Explorer and my wife borrows it when her lady Datejust is not appropriate in Mexico or other travels. The original limited
issue of 300 watches had acrylic domed crystals, and have really gone up in price. Considering that Breitling regularly uses ETA caliber movements,
and still hikes their prices, these are honestly tough watches.

Interesting points. Rolex still makes a first class watch that not only holds value,
but does better than the S&P 500. They are independent and answer only to the
Wilsdorf Foundation. In current overseas travel, it does pay to have another "travel
watch"and the 39 Explorer fills that spot well.

Alternatively, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms references with the 1315 movement really
are first rate-IF one can live with the size and reduced re-sale value.

I am sick of the Rolex nonsense and poseurs...I think I may get another...or another seiko as I have a few...they are so solid and I need to impress no one with my steering wheel, job or whatever.
