5140 vs 3940 Dial Dimensions

Good afternoon,

I have been looking more and more at perpetual calendars Pateks, and I am considering going for either a 3940P or 5140P and I was wondering if a 3940 dial could be fitted to a 5140, considering the case dimensions are very similar.

I much prefer the dimensions and exhibition caseback of the 5140, however, I am not a fan at all of the font and font size used.

Not sure on dimensions but would be interested to follow along in your journey. I have been looking for a 3940G or 3940P for months.

I have reservations about this type of modification but…

the saatchi limited release was a 3940 case with a 5140 salmon dial.

Can’t say if they modified either or simply made one look like the other?

The dials of the special 3940s like the Saatchi 3940G salmon or 3940P blue look like 5140 dials but they are smaller. Compare the markers at 3 and 9, for example, which are much shorter on those special 3940s than on the 5140 just like all the other markers as well.

If anything, this seems to confirm that a 3940 dial will be too small for a 5140.

Not sure if it’s possible, if the 1mm makes that big difference I would just buy the 5140. I’ve previously owned a 5140g and currently daily a 3940p. While the 5140 is an excellent value proposition and a beautiful watch I don’t think it’s even close to a 3940!

It’s not only the 1mm case size difference, It’s also the lug width.
The 5140 I believe is 21mm.
Isn’t the 3940 ~18mm?

Tangential to your question regarding size. I considered both 3940 and 5140 for a watch to wear not just collect. I ultimately went 5140. I liked a lot but it did not become a frequent wearer as I intended it. Much to the dismay of some of my friends, I moved the 5140 for a 5327. I am much happier with the 5327 now.
