The Rolex Watch Box......Why ???

Watch boxes have been getting a lot of ink lately...Why..

I have a bunch of them....They serve no practical purpose, yet the first thing out of a potential suitors bag of bargaining tools is "Does it have a box?"

Then the box gets promptly stuck, forgotten, in a dark closet or under the bed..

But today, boxes are being sold on the 'net almost as much as watches....everybody has to have one.........and most are fakes.........actually, Rolex doesn't really make any boxes, they order them to spec.

It really wasn't too many years ago that you went to a Rolex Dealer, they fitted the watch to our wrist, put the papers in an envelope for you, and you walked out the door with your new prize on. About the only time anybody saw a box was if it was a gift...

So, what's the deal.......

Why do all you guys think that you gotta have a box with your watch....What, exactly, is the point.... ???

It makes the watch feels "complete" along with the paper/card.

X2...it doesnt feel like you have bought the whole thing..and like what you said in the near future that you need to sell or trade because of some financial need then most buyers will buy it with the box and papers compared to none..and besides the box cost $150 to buy ....

It means a WIS owned the watch and likely took very good care of it. Same for camera gear.

Well, I would think that it makes folks more comfortable with the purchase from a non AD source. If you buy your watch at an AD, getting a box may not be such a big deal but when buying from a private party, the more original accessories, the better.

x4. Have to agree its just nice to have the complete se as it left the factory. I just think the watches are easy to move on if you have the box and papers too.

You be right on, eagle eye Oscar . One is a box for an Omega Speedmaster, which I sold but still have the box & books. Ebay time for the Omega box. Adding another box soon . Use your 3rd eye and tell me which one will be added next... Hint, its a Rolex that isn't yet in my sig line.

It's nice to have the complete package, but not a deal breaker for me.

Its good to use the box and papers line as leverage for a discount . You are right though, they serve no purpose.

The box isn't such a huge factor for me...but the watch better come with papers! All the boxes take up so much real estate in my closet.

I'd have to agree here. I think my Panerai and Omega boxes were nicer than the Rolex box. However...the goods inside...thats a different story

I really would like to find a box for my Tudor Sub. I keep looking. The last correct one on ebay went for over $800. That's nuts

The only reason I keep the box is in case I am going to sell the watch. I guess many buyers feels it looks more "new" if it is in the original box.

Honestly- I do not need a box BUT I know that if i ever wanted to flip it for something else then i would get more $$ if I have the box etc.

I often buy cheaper watches without the box and would buy a rolex etc without a box for the right price and then when i get it serviced i will have a service certificate anyway.

Doesn't really makes a difference to me, since my boxes are stored somewhere in a cabinet anyway, never look at them (unless i open the cabinet). To be honest, Rolex boxes are cheap and look like crap, my $2K Tag Heuer came with a much better looking leather finished box, which looks really classy.

I guess it has more to do with the possible resell value? Wouldn't pay a dime extra for a box, unless its a unique vintage model.

Speaking of watch box, I recently acquired an Omega Big Date. The box is a beautifully crafted, hard wood! Put it next to the Rolex box, the Rolex box looks like it came with a Casio.

Rolex boxes are awful. I wish Rolex put as much effort into their packaging as they did their watches. Panerai or AP have great boxes.

I think today's customer want to get their money's worth & if anchor's are no longer available, then give us our box!

Larry makes a very good point.

Vintage Collectors pay vast amounts of money for the correct box and booklets for their pieces.

Until such time as the blatant prejudice over "completeness" is removed I shall quietly keep my boxes, bit and bobs in storage. I will wait for others trailblazers to trash their stuff first.

I have been trying to "complete" my vintage Sub set. Wow, very expensive and difficult. It's a bit of a let down when you get the little plastic piece that you just paid over $600.00 for....

Makes folks feel safer about a purchase which I understand. For me, the papers showing an actual record of purchase are more important than a box.

I just keep my boxes in a storage area. I feel the box completes the watch along with the gurantee card.
