First time my Rolex got noticed

Had my BLNR 18 months now and love it, wear it every day. Although I've stopped thinking about it mostly, its just "my watch".

Was at a casual bar/restaurant in Sydney last week and as the waiter delivered drinks he just quietly said "nice watch" and was gone, it even took me a few moments to process what he'd said.

I still remember feeling self conscious walking out of the AD in a not-wealthy part of the UK, I felt like everyone could see it and I would be mugged at any minute. Now I realise almost no-one notices our Rolexes, apart from other fans and really they're just for us, not to show off.

The only time someone has noticed my Rolex is at the occasional f2f watch sale transaction with a fellow WIS.
Doesn’t stop me from constantly trying to spot what others are wearing - and then trying not to judge them too harshly if I don’t see a sweeping second.

When I began getting into watches, i would look at peoples wrists looking for the sweeping hand.

I have since learned though that not every mechanical watch has a sweeping hand.

Mechanical watches that “tick” once per second are called deadbeat seconds watches or something along those lines

So true, but I do notice what others are wearing.

Funny story, my daughter got her first "watch compliment" on her Milgauss (21st birthday gift), but the comment from the lady that noticed her watch was, "Wow, nice watch! Is that a Michael Kors?" LOL

That is funny. Sort of similar story A friend was visiting us with her family and we took them to Disney for 3 days. I wore my subC each of the days (as I usually always have it on). On the last day I had a red perlon strap on. The mom (low 60s) must have noticed it due to the louder strap and excitingly said "niceee watch!", followed by "Is it an apple watch?" Smh

BLNR like most other SS Rolex's will NEVER get noticed.

The only watch of mine that got any compliments was a DD40 president and RG skydweller. They are like 1000x more blingy and in your face than any SS Rolex.

My SS Panerai was the only other watch that got noticed ever.

Never say never. I think the OP just shared an instance of his BLNR getting noticed. My SS pieces get noticed and commented on from time to time, as well.

i've seen people look at my dj on the subway and have seen the exact moment they realized it was a rolex. pretty funny, but other than that idk if most people know what they are looking at if they do happen to look at your watch

same here.

i feel like the DJ is generally a very attractive watch that most people will like. the sports models and other "hotter pieces" generally get more admiration from those who know what they are.

personally my rolex datejust and OP get the more attention that my sports models, and i believe women tend to prefer them too. (though you get many women owning daytonas and subs)

I have experienced the same, no matter what you wear, its the GV that catches the attention! It’s a popper!

I don't like walking out of an AD with their bag as it marks you out as a buyer, so I take my own bag and put it in that.

Indeed! I think I would bring a non-descript shopping bag and place my purchase in there. Needless risk to advertise what you just bought. Some stores will offer a security escort to your vehicle. Can't be too careful. Cheers!

Good idea!

Unfortunately the only thing in the AD bag when I walk out is a catalogue

Most people just don’t care about watches. I never used to notice them till I started to develop an interest in them.

Well, you know you have to tip him big then. lol

The first time any stranger ever noticed the 116710BLNR I was wearing he tried to mug me in broad daylight. It such is a multifaceted city and I am grateful for it.

Ok. Really? You are greatful you live in a city where you like the person who is trying to steal your watch? That seems odd to me.

I think those were two separate thoughts? Although it was an odd way to put it.

You mean first time get commented on?
I would imagine others noticed but didn’t say anything.

I rarely get any comments either. When someone comments on it, I sometimes wonder if they were just being nice or they knew what I was wearing. Once I drive thru Starbucks and the guy (in his 20’s) said “I like your watch”. I was wearing a Patek 5124g. Another time, I dropped off a Swatch for repair at a Swatch store in a nice mall, wearing a Breguet 7027. The store manager commented “nice watch!”, to which I replied thanks, assuming he knew the brand, being part of the Swatch group. Then he followed up with a question “is that a Swatch?” Since then I take others’ compliments on my watches with a grain of salt :-)

True story. I stepped into a G-Shock store months ago shopping for a birthday gift to a relative, and the young salesman noticed my Subc. He complimented it and asked me how much those things went for these days so I casually told him. His jaw dropped in disbelief. He obviously had limited knowledge as a very young guy about luxury watches, so I told him someday he would surely get one for himself. He smiled and handed me the watch I bought. It was then that I handed him my watch so he could try it on, which he gladly did. The glow in his eyes convinced me I was looking at a future WIS. Glad I did because there aren’t a lot of us out in the wild anymore, no thanks to the advent of ‘wearables’.

I assume the watch gets noticed by WIS but not made a comment on. I notice watches but don't comment on them unless there is some type of a discussion going on already.

A few weeks ago I took my son to a podiatrist doctor here and doctor was wearing a BLNR. My 7 year old son asked him: 'Is your watch a Batman? My dad has one.' which the doctor missed completely. I think he was a non-WIS doc who just happened to own a nice BLNR. The doctor, trying to take attention away from his Rolex, nicely replied: 'no, this is a boring watch, just tells the time!' He thought my son was talking about some Apple watch or something.

Second that; my son doesn’t know what Rolex is but surely knows my Batman. H ora recognize it in videos pretty well. He also made it super clear to me he will be taking the watch when he grows up since he is the Batman at home.and his brother will take the blro since he is Superman
