Just Picked Up another Tudor Watch
Hello Watch Aficionados,
My daily driver is a Tudor Black Bay Red (for the office) and my weekend ride is a Seiko Padi (for the yard work), so I was in the market for a dress watch. I was intrigued by the 36mm Rolex Datejust (the fluted bezel, silver dial and stick markers look extremely sharp in photos). After a bit of research I found a mint one that I liked in New Jersey and met the seller for lunch to try it on and I realized it was just too small for my liking. I prefer a watch with a bit more presence on the wrist and 36mm just wasn't cutting it. I then went to my local AD and told my salesman that I was looking for a dress watch, and I tried on the Datejust II 41 mm. Aaaahhhhh- this was more like it. It had a nice heft to it and that fluted bezel is beautiful. It felt like a man's watch (unlike the 36mm). However, I am not a fan of the cyclops and I prefer a leather strap on my watches (and no I am not going to modify a new Rolex and remove the cyclops and metal bracelet). He pushed the Rolex aside and said , "forget this, why don't we just build the perfect watch for you?" I was immediately intrigued. He pulled out the Tudor style catalog and said we can mix and match all of these combinations and make the watch that you really want. "Wow" - I thought...now this was different. Normally, I am used to just buying whatever they have in the glass case. These are the specs that I selected: - Fluted Bezel in gold or steel (I chose steel) -Dial: Black, silver, champagne, blue or burgundy (I chose radiant Silver) -Silver or Gold indices (I chose gold with no diamonds) -Polish or Satin finish ( I chose satin) -Case Size (41,38,34,28 sizes are available - I chose 41mm) -Leather strap or Metal bracelet (I chose leather) Two weeks later, he calls me and tells me to swing by to pick up my watch. Let me say it was worth the wait. First, the box it comes in is beautiful. It has a soft-touch black leather exterior and a cream interior with sharp red accents. Yes, the case matters to me when making a purchase because it shows me that they actually put some thought into the entire package. When I opened the box, my eyes shifted right to the steel fluted bezel and the way it refracts the light like a diamond, you just can't help but look at it. I then picked up the watch and felt the ultra smooth satin finish on the case sides, giving it an understated classy look. On the brilliant silver dial are the gold indices, which are highly polished with beveled edges- pure class. The curved anchor script 'Rotor Self-Winding' is a nice nod to the past. The crown matches the fluted bezel and has a slight cone shape to it with the Tudor shield sitting proud. The leather strap is butter soft calf-skin with the satin and polished Tudor double locking clasp which is excellent. The screw down crown has zero play and when winding it up, it felt solid with positive feeback. The date wheel also has distinctive shifts as it went around - snik, snik, snik. The power reserve is 38 hours and waterproof to 330ft. On the wrist it feels just right, not heavy and not light. The perfect weight for a dress watch. It has just enough profile to let you know it's there but will easily fit under the sleeve. Overall, I am extremely impressed with the craftsmanship and its distinctive looks. This is a very handsome piece. If you are in the market for a dress watch and want size, color, strap and finish options this is a great option. |

I remember when the new style was first released, and was really impressed. I always wondered why you don't see more of them around. I thought it was a handsome watch, and I didn't know they had so many options for it.

He opened up the catalog and showed me all the options, there is something for everybody. You can expect to pay from $2,100 to $3,100 depending on your choices.

Great combo, and nice retro look, too. Tudor's flexibility is one of its strong points. I'd rather own that than a Cellini, tbh.

Congrats. Love the flexibility and custom ordering you can do for quick delivery at a reasonable price.
I did this with my wife's Tudor. 28 was too small,34 was too big. 31mm was perfect. They had black dial with diamond dial and bezel. She wanted white with just the diamond dial. About 2 weeks later it shows up at my door via fed ex and all at about $2700. Can't beat it with a baseball bat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
