My soon-to-be wife and I will be travelling to Italy for 3 weeks for our honeymoon, and I'm wondering about taking jewlery / watches with us on the trip... Do others travel with their watches when going abroad or leave them at home?

We'll be travelling all over the country--staying in nice places some nights, less nice places others, etc... Basically renting a car and drivign the western coast...

Thanks for any advice...

Been everywhere....at least twice...never had any problems! Ok..there was that one time in Amsterdam...but it wasn't mine!! Really!! Oh...watches..yeah, I wear my Rolex everywhere!

I always travel with my GMT-II. Never had a problem.

Just to be on the safe side, I would not leave it unattended in your hotel room. You just never know...

When we took a Cruise through Italy, We were warned not to wear it in Naples...
otherwise I always wear my favorite watches on Vacation...
When you are away, you are always a customer, and I always seem to get better customer service when I have a nice watch on my wrist...

My wife used to tell me this about her diamonds, but I couldn't quite appreciate it until I experienced it myself...

Really.... Your from Boston is that any safer than Italy?

Just letting you know what people have been saying... I was warned that "people would cut off your arm in naples if they see a nice watch."

a few people have mentioned that they dont let their wives wear their larger diamonds on vacations etc... Personally, I've never cared... things are insured, and its not like I'm going to the ghetto or anything... The last person I spoke with got me a bit worried though...

I would say that depends where you are, etc...

Boston is one of the safest major cities in the US... Italy is a country... I'd say Naples is less safe than Portofino... but hey, I'm just asking...

My fiancé is on a forum of women and diamond rings, and most of the women on there do not travel with their rings anywhere for fear of having things stolen, etc...

As I mentioned... I have never thought twice about any of these things... It was only after someone brought it up to me that I stepped back and decided to ask questions...

Ive never had any problems traveling anywhere,my closest call came twenty minutes from my house here in st.petersburg,was nearly robbed at a stop light by a scumbag with a handgun-I ducked and stepped on the gas-luckily he didnt shoot.just shows you -trouble can come when you least expect it.

I've worn mine all over the world, without problems. Exercise some caution, as you normally would, and you should be fine. Enjoy your trip !

I usually only take one watch when I travel...

It's normally a Rolex of some kind and I've never had any issues.

Perhaps a solid gold Day-date would draw more attention than my Subs or GMT's though......

Yep, everything is on the homeowner's insurance policy as a rider, so I'm fully covered in case anything happens...

Which reminds me... I've been meaning to pull my wife's jewlery / watch off my homeowner's insurace and get a policy with Chubb... Anyone else using them? I've heared they are one of the best...

Don't do it , the rest of the world is after your Rolex

I wore my Bluesy all through Europe 10 years ago . Just take the ame precautions as you would at home .

PS: I never leave home without a Rolex

I wore my DD on my trip to New Zealand - no problem but carried a BIG stick when I visited JJ.

IMO there are unsafe areas in all Cities. I think a bit of commonsense goes long way.

That's true. But i've never been to London or Paris and will this year for the first time. There is the element of the uknown and given we'll be catching public transport (ie metro), i've heard a lot of warnings about pickpockets, muggers and the like that target people even during the day.

Now that someone on this thread mentioned ladies rings, i just forked out bigtime for an engagement ring for my sweetie (as much as a new Sub just about) and would not be able to replace it if anything happened. Btw the jeweller i purchased it from wore a two tone Datejust!

Insurance is out of the question as here in Oz:
personal valuables insurance comes bundled with contents cover which i certainly don't require/need.
its bloody expensive.

So i'm really hesitant to take any future rollie to Uk/France.

Surely you'll stop by Maranello? After all, what could be more romantic than touring Ferrari's hometown? The most beautiful car I've ever seen has to be the 599GTB Fiorano. The local dealership had a red one in stock, and I couldn't believe how amazing it looks in person.

I wish I could... And I actually tried to get that into the trip, but it was too out of the way.. . We'll be heading down from Portofino to Florence, and wanted to take the coastal route so we could hit Pisa...

My wife and I have been all over Italy, Germany, London, Paris, etc (pre-Rolex, but with her Engagement and wedding bands) with no issues. Don't look like a tourist and you'll be fine.

I find it amusing, this topic pops up once a week it seems. As Americans we worry about traveling in other countries. I assure you that there are Italians how were Rolex watches throughout their country and do not even give it a second thought. I never see more Rolex's then when I am walking down regent St in London, seems like every third person is wearing one. I used to live in Korea, and my wife travels extensively throughout Asia with her rings and watch on with no problems.

A good friend of lives in Bangalore and wears one of the limited edition Panerai Platinum editions with the NOS Rolex movement in it, and he would not think twice about wearing it.

I say wear what you want, use good common sense and you will be safe no matter were you are in the world. Oh, also travel far and often and you will grow less weary of those other exotic countries like Italy!!!

I live in Italy. Its generally safe here,no problem. But I would not wear it in Naple. News shows sometimes people being rolexrobbed. But it's a matter of common sense: this guys was driving in Naple with his rooftop down merceds SLK and his Rolex perfectly visible....bingo !! Got punched in the face by 2 kids and his Rolex was gone....

I have been around the world in both developed and non developed countries and newer had any problems and actually never heard anyone that did. Since you are going to the developed part of the world you should be fine, bring your commonsence. You wouldn't go in to the wrong neigbourhoods in your home town with your valuables, why would you go there on vaccation?
