So is there such a thing as a completely worn out Daytona movement

I bought a 2008 Slate Gray faced 2 color watch with all the paperwork. After a month it stopped, I sent it to a recognized repair company, he suggested the movement was like an old worn-out engine block. So, I took it to Mayors AD in Tampa for a 2nd opinion today. Now we wait for 3 weeks and an estimate. What can possibly happen to completely wear out a watch internally but look like brand new on the exterior, bracelet is in awesome shape etc.

I suppose there is an economic tradeoff where the cost of a used 4130 is less than the hours of work and replacement parts for your Daytona's movement.

As for how this happens, lack of routine maintenance for 16 years plus a sharp, damaging blow might be causal.

But I'd also suggest the first watchmaker could be wrong.

Just send it to a Rolex Service Centre. You don't need to source a new movement.

I think that when someone says "completely worn out" they might simply mean that the typically worn parts and lack of lubrication are present, not that the movement should be tossed for a new one.

A full service cleans, replaces worn parts, oils and adjusts the movement and it is again like-new.

A 2008 Daytona is fairly new as watches go

Thanks, I echo your sentiment, it has gone to Rolex for estimate and repairs. Is that a $3k or $5k deal?

Agree with Larry I would say it's impossible to completely wear out any Rolex movement made over the past 60 years.Yes all mechanical movement's need proper service but after a RSC service watch movement will be as good as when new.

The number one reason why a complete Rolex movement necessitates replacement is due to rust. I've seen numerous pieces that were just brown upon removing the caseback.

I did see one piece that was crushed. Our store ended up sending it to an RSC, but I'm confident that a new movement would be on that estimate.

Yep, generally even if the watch is worn like a tool and completely banged up the movement is usually still in very good condition.

Aside from rust, the most damage I've seen on the 4130 was done by unauthorized watchmakers. Mangled screws, odd end shakes, minute counter jumper spring jammed in between the bridges, balance out of poise. Classic ''I know a good watchmaker who does it for half RSC price'' shenanigans.

Yep, Larry, Peter and Adam are spot on. Kind of a silly thing for a watchmaker to have told you. He obviously didn’t take you for much of a watch enthusiast with a remark like that - a bit disrespectful, honestly. Either that or he simply isn’t an experienced/competent watchmaker.

I'm not even sure what this means and would love to listen to a qualified Rolex watchmaker explain this. I have daily worn a 2005 Submariner for over 18 years in all kinds of rough service and it was serviced every 9 years. It keeps perfect time and is as reliable as the sun. Very few parts required replacement during those servicing. In the garage I have a few mid-1960s Chevrolet 327s, some of which have heavy wear. They are not comparable to a Rolex movement, IMO.

Edit: That is a beautiful Daytona and I hope that the service makes for long term joyful wearing of it!

Update picked up my watch from Mayors of Tampa on Wednesday. Like new I had new hands, face, crystal complete service and clean up. Watch is like brand new ..right at $2k
So this one definitely didnt wear out

Glad all is now well and fixed like new, watch should be good for decades to come with just keeping it clean and regular normal routine RSC service.
