etching in the sapphire crystal???

I recently purchased a Brand new V series Submariner a few weeks ago and have just noticed that there is no etching of the Rolex symbol at the bottom of the crystal near the number 6 of the dial. I remember that some of the models had this etching. Do the later models still have the etching as I am getting very worried? Thanks!

Unless it's a Milgauss GV it will have the etching . They can be hard to see sometimes . The hardest one to see I have come across so far is on my SDDS

It will be there, shine a torch across the crystal & use a loupe, it is hard to spot on my V serial Sub.

I thought they started the etching back in '02. Try placing your watch under a bright light, then tilt the watch slowly. You should see it ever so slightly. Do this a few times....you'll start seeing the coronet.

Took me awhile to spot the one on my daytona (also a V series), but if you tilt it under a bright light you can usually catch sight of it with the naked eye. It sometimes appears as a tiny 'smudge' at the 6 if my watch catches the sun at a certain angle. A long as you bought it from an AD (or, if not, you are confident that you got it from a reputable dealer) then I don't think you need to worry. It's there.

I used my daughters "eyeclops" toy and it did the trick. Plugs into the tv, has a built in light and takes seconds to use.

Even when i used a loupe at the AD,it still took me 3 mins to see it!!!!

I found shining a light from 12 o'clock towards 6 o'clock made it easier to find.

The best way for me to see it is by going outside on a sunny day and looking at just the right angle. You can't see it be looking directly at the crystal, you need to be looking at the bottom from a side angle, it will jump out at you.

is the etching smaller than on previous models??

I am surprised as I have fairly good eyesight and have seen it on many other models except for my new one which is why I posted the thread Is it possible that the etching could have been missed during the making of the crystal as they make millions of them per year?

I still haven't found it on my Deepsea and if it's not there, I wouldn't be bothered.

Try taking a small pen light and shine it from the 12 to the 6 across the surface of the crystal and tilt the watch slowly.

As long as you bought from reliable source don't bother to strain your eyes it will be there.

Aany watch after 2003 should have it. Even if the crystal was replaced, it should still have the coronet, albeit with an "S" on it. Best way for me was to use a laser pointer and a loupe.

I wouldn't sweat it though. After all the trouble, when I finally saw it I felt it wasn't worth the eyestrain!

It's better to use a blue/white LED flashlight than a laser pointer.. Laser beam may reflect from your ROLEX and blow up your retina !!

Dark bacground is much easier to see.

It took me days to see it on my YM Platty. Finally see it using a loupe and laser pointer. Even with that it took me a long time. Need to be in exact angle to see it on my Platty.

You should be able to see it on your Sub.......good luck.

Only if it needs, so your crystal was good.

My '84 SS Sub is currently getting serviced at an RSC... They needed to replace the crystal - does this mean that mine will now have it, as well? Or will they put the old style back on...

Replacement crystals will come back with the LEC, but it will have a very small "S" sideways in the circular part of the crown. The "S" is for service.

Try an LED flashlight and use a jeweler's loupe. That little bugger is hard to see otherwise.

The only way that you could have a real rolex without a sapphire etching is if for some reason you don't have a Rolex sapphire crystal but have an aftermarket one instead. I have seen an older (80's) Datejust that used to have plastic but was replaced with a sapphire crystal by a grey market jeweler. Either way, you definitely don't have a BNIB Rolex as Rolex QA would never let an un-etched sapphire out of the plant.
