Incoming Explorer I (1st Rolex)

I didn't have any intention of purchasing Saturday when I went in to try on the Explorer. But I did! No discounts to be had, but for my first purchase, I wanted an in-person transaction. I appreciate everyone's help in the other thread and via PM.

It is larger on the wrist than I anticipated, but I feel in love with it just the same. The fact that has such a low profile helps - it's so delightfully slim. Three links removed and I tighten it with the easy-link click-y adjustment. For such a large watch it's surprisingly easy to forget it's on my wrist. In a good way. It's by far the most comfortable watch I've ever worn. I wore it all weekend and couldn't stop staring at it. Or going into a dark closet to see the lume.

I did experience sticker shock all weekend. 80% of me is stunned and having a bit of a second guess on whether this was a smart thing to do. The other 20% is already planning my next purchase.

My husband tried on the GMT, Submariner Date, and DJ41 and has narrowed it down to the GMT or DJ41. Personally, I told him he could totally justify both as they are different enough from each other. I think he'll end up starting with the DJ41, oyster bracelet, smooth bezel, and it's between the black and white dials.

I've attached some crappy iPhone pictures. It's harder than I thought getting a decent watch on the wrist photo. As you can tell by the one photo (that I can't get to post vertical to save my life), my cat was entirely unimpressed with the amount of money or history I was currently sporting.

I was 90% sure I wanted a DJ41 when I bought my Sub but I waited a while, tried on a few more models and did more research and ended up with the two tone Submariner with the blue dial and blue ceramic bezel (bluesy). I liked the DJ but I already have a stainless TAG that is similar enough to the DJ that I decided to go with the more sporty Submariner. I wouldn't mind a TT DJ41 with jubilee bracelet though.

I think the sporty models tend to hold their value a bit better than the DJ if that matters at all to you and your husband.

Congrats on your purchase!

Thanks! I don't think the resale value will factor in for my husband. He likes the DJ for the versatility - that it can dress down or up.

Thanks! For a moment, I had a "how does he know my name?!" moment, then remembered that I have it in my profile.

I love the dark Rhodium dial myself and would get it if offered in the smaller sizes, but it appears lighter in the 31mm DJ.

That is what I'm focusing on. It was just a bit difficult to wrap my head around dropping that much coin at once. ;)

Yes, I'm sure Tate's only concern was if this outlay in cash was going to equal a reduction in his treats. I'm not sure why I love the furry little psychopaths, but I do.

Congratz!!!

Thanks! My husband & I both agree that it is a very understated piece and doesn't scream "ROLEX!". Which is fine - I don't think I want my watch screaming at people. ;) The more I researched watches, the more I was drawn to the Explorer I, both in looks and in history.

Besides, by Christmas I'll have my dad's DJ, which, with a two-tone jubilee bracelet, will scream "ROLEX!"

Congratulations. My first Rolex was an Explorer I which was given to me by my mum after my dad died. Subsequently progressed to a DJ and am now the proud owner of a SS Daytona C...

Still think the Explorer is the quintessential Rolex...
