Advice needed. Keep SubC Date or Daytona?
Hi everyone! You may remember me from my first thread a couple months ago where most of you convinced me to buy my first Rolex, a new SubC Date. I have been loving it!
However, by complete luck/chance (literally) I just had the opportunity to purchase a new black dial Daytona for MSRP. I only had about ten seconds to decide if I wanted it, so of course I said yes. LOL I love both watches, but I can really only afford/rationalize keeping one of the two. The SubC is almost new - I have been babying it and it has only a few minor hairline marks on the bracelet that are only visible if you look very carefully. The Daytona is brand new and unworn in its plastic “coffin” still. But Both were “de-stickered” by the AD. So here are my options: -Sell the Daytona, presumably for a profit. How much? Not sure, but I assume at least a couple thousand dollars? Keep wearing my SubC and enjoy. -Sell the lightly worn SubC, I’m guessing for a small loss? Maybe almost break even if I’m lucky? And then, stretch my budget further to start wearing and enjoying the Daytona (which I never thought I would ever own only because I saw online prices close to $19-20k and just said “nope!”) and enjoy the fact that I am apparently a pretty lucky first time Rolex owner! If you read my previous thread you would know I had to overcome a significant amount of lost opportunity cost “fear of missing out” to convince myself to spend the dough on the Sub, but as soon as I got it I had no regrets. Now I’m holding a new Daytona in my hands which cost me about 40% more than the sub, but which I bought on a rush of adrenaline simply because I knew it was unlikely I would have the opportunity to get one again at that price any time in the foreseeable future, and that if I had buyers remorse I could flip it without a loss. (Please don’t get mad at me for having this thought process. I did not plan on this happening, it was just a spur of the moment decision when the opportunity came up.) Decisions, decisions. What should I do? And please don’t just say “keep the one that sings to me”... they are both singing so loudly I feel like I’m going deaf! 🤪🤪🤪 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would sell the Daytona for a profit and keep the Sub. That Daytona is nearly impossible to tell the time on. The chrono is very hard to decipher, for me anyway.

i would keep the sub and sell the daytona for two reasons:
1. the sub is a better choice for daily wear. 2. Demand for daytona is high and if you can sell it for 17k, indirectly speaking, you got your sub for 3k. |

Throw the Daytona up for 18k, sell for 17.5, boom done.

Sell the Daytona and you have subsidised the cost of the sub with your profit

My first was the SubC and the 2nd was the Daytona C. For me, the Sub is the better watch and if I could only have one it would be the Sub, no doubt.
The other way to look at it is that the Sub is fairly easy to replace. You could sell it, wear the Daytona for a while, and see how you feel about it actually wearing it. If you don't like the Daytona, you can then sell it and buy another Sub. While you won't make as much "profit" as you would with it new in the coffin, you'll at least have a better answer than guessing how you'll feel. You don't have to apologize either way. You did the right thing snapping it up. Not doing so would have been crazy. Edit: Obviously, the better answer is that if you can find any way financially to keep both, you should. |

If you flip the Daytona right away and regret letting it go, you'll likely never get another at MSRP. At a minimum sit on it for a week or two before deciding. If it were me, I'd keep the Daytona and sell the Sub Date. But, I also have zero interest in a black Sub Date. I prefer the standard Sub over the Date. |

Sell Daytona for the profit then bang your sub is essentially “free”. Enjoy the brand new sub and get a different watch in a couple years

I went from wearing subs over the years to now Daytona exclusively. It’s been my daily driver for over a year and by far my fav watch of all time. I feel the Daytona suits me better and the lugs look more balanced on the watch. Both are great. Good luck with your decision.

I made the suggestion on selling the daytona based off of his previous posts, he made a slight stretch to purchase the SubC. assuming he paid tax, he's in for 13.5k.
If he can sell it for 18k-20k, i rather make the 5-6k and do something else, rather than have it tied up in a watch. I rather have that cash in my pocket for other projects in life, but everyone's situation is different |

I would submit that a lot of the ‘demand’ is due to the sociological hype - and most of the desire (demand) is because many want what is unavailable or perceived ‘hard to get’. My Daytona’s don’t get much wrist time - even the 500. As far as Rolex - 114060 probably gets the most wrist time. For me - hype just ruins a watch. Period. Not everyone is mesmerized by Daytona’s.... Just my .02 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’d take a breathe and decide which one you’re going to enjoy wearing the most. The answer should be obvious, just take money out of the equation.

If not, which one do you enjoy wearing more? Simple.

Advice needed. Keep SubC Date or Daytona?
Thanks everyone for the responses. I don’t plan to make a hasty decision.
I would love to “demo” the Daytona before deciding but I am not sure I will actually wear the Daytona before making a decision because I assume that any buyer would much prefer to have a de-stickered but otherwise untouched watch, than a watch that has been lightly scuffed up by a “tire kicker.” But Maybe I am over-estimating the effect that minor wear has on sale prices? Interesting: It looks like most of the “keep the Daytona” responses so far seem to be from people who either dislike subs or those who just strongly prefer the Daytona. Everyone who is neutral or like both seem to be leaning toward selling the Daytona... Quote:
If by sealed you mean fully stickered, then no. But the AD removed it from the plastic coffin, removed the stickers in front of me, and put it right back in the coffin. I have looked it over and it appears essentially spotless other than one or two errant AD fingerprints. I haven’t handled/touched it at all... I’m worried if I put it on my wrist I will fall in love... LOL I enjoy wearing the Sub quite a lot and I am pretty sure I would also like wearing the Daytona, but I can’t say for sure! Ideally I would love to own both watches, I’m just not sure that’s the smartest choice for me right now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

if you can afford the Daytona i’d keep that. A year from now if you regret it you can sell it for more than you paid and buy a new Sub. If you sell the Daytona and a year from now wish you had not, you’re SOL.

Surprising answers here, I'd def keep the D500, white would have been my ideal, but I sold the black subc twice so that doesn't do it for me and nor does $2K in the bank, I want to wear the watch I like most! Hope you do too, take money out of it.

why not take the daytona out for a test drive? wear it in rotation with the sub for a few weeks and see what you personally like best... and if by then you decide to sell the Daytona.. you'll still receive a nice profit even if its slightly less than what you'd get for it now but at least you know... better than selling it and regretting it

Sell the Daytona. Highly overrated and very difficult to tell time on.
