Over Wound??
I have left my watch at home while I was away for the week. I came home today and I saw that my watch was still running. Amazed that it was still running after 4 days I told my pops. He then broke the news that he took it out to wear it a few times. Then I thought about keeping it running, so I gave it one turn and the clicks were extremely loud. Does that just mean that my pops over wound my watch??

No. It isn't possible to over-wind an automatic Rolex or almost any other automatic wind watch. Unlike manual wind watches, an automatic does not have the mainspring attached solidly to the barrel. It rides in indents in the barrel's inner diameter, and will "slip" when full tension is reached. Below is a graphic of a Rolex mainspring and barrel. The barrel indents are clearly visible at 3:00, 7:00 and 11:00 positions. Others are similar.

After awhile, you'll be able to feel that slip. A bit scary I know, but very interesting. Manually winding is a series of smooth clicks up until fully-wound, when you'll feel a small perturbation (slip) in the smoothness. Now I just need to figure out why a 1 week old 3186 isn't keeping within COSC specs... Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |

False alarm fellas. Pops has just been enjoying the watch. I just didn't recognize the way the Datejust wound compared to my Submariner, they click differently. SOrry guys.

I have also read it is impossible to over-wind an automatic Rolex.

There's nothing in the movement that can increase the loudness of the clicks when you wind the watch. What you're hearing is the spring loaded ratchet clicking as it engages the teeth in the ratchet gear during winding.

AH! He already hinted me. He said the "the ones with the gold in the center links are very nice" Maybe soon. I suppose during Father's day. I just have a hard time choosing a TT Datejust or a TT Sub.

This is so funny. Yes, he might have worn it once, but he went out dancing and swinging his arms in the air every time the DJ told them to do so
