Have a few Rolex datejust models in the collection and wanted to know if the 2000 and 2001 model years use 904l steel? Unable to research the exact dates.

First year was 1985 for the seadweller. Sounds like 2001 for the rest but like you said, I didn't find an exact date for all.

It matters to me because the nickel in 904L gives me a rash. So a year 2000/01 sub or GMT would be 316L stainless still? If so, I know what years to avoid and which years are okay.

A 16800 from the EARLY 80s I believe you want. They were the transition model where the steel changed. The ones from the later half of the 80s were 904L. I forgot the exact changeover date :( not sure about GMT.

Would the late 80's versions that were changed to 904L be what are known as the 168000?

904L steel has improved greatly even from the first generation of 904L ie refined chemistry, less impurities

My sub is an L series 16610 from 1989 ..

I found a new old stock submariner that is a 1990 16610 model. Is it possible this is made with a case made of 904L steel, and a bracelet of 316L steel? I have a nickel allergy so need an older model.

My best guess is It's most likely 316 so you should be right
Others with more detailed background info may have a different view.
Of course, if the Mid-case has been changed with a service case at a later date for any reason then it may well be 904 But in all likelihood if it has indeed been changed, the serial number on the case won't match the original paperwork so that would be a giveaway
