Why is Panerai removing display casebacks?
I saw a brand new 915 at an AD today, but from the previous display case back. Why change them? The movement isn’t much to see - but it is still nicer!!!
Any worries I should have for buying it? Was there anything wrong? |

To be honest the Panerai movements are so covered up it almost makes it a non issue. The jewels have a nice red glow, I guess.

The 9010 has been reworked. It no longer hacks and finishing has changed. Not sure if that has anything to do with the solid backs. Personally, I think most PAMs should have solid backs so no problem here.

I think all 9010 Evolution movement pieces have a solid back. On some pieces, like the PAM01033 GMT with 9011 movement, the transparent back is part of the design to see power reserve.

If you're going to have a display back you need to put at least some effort into finishing the movement
I agree, theyre not much to look at but if you're not going to decorate the movement even slightly, the addition of a clear case back would likely evoke a "why bother" sentiment from customers, so its cheaper and easier to not bother and put a solid back on them. That having been said, I'm a sucker for a clear case back, highly decorated movement or not, so anything i consider purchasing gets an extra point if its got a display back, but thats just me |

I love seeing the movement even when not very decorated/well finished. Kind of defeats the point of a mechanical watch if you can't see it in action!

I recently picked up a 997 on a whim. I don't even remember why I walked into the AD that day. It's a 48mm green monster. Not my only Panerai so it's a nice change of pace and fun to wear. The case back is actually tinted. So perhaps that's Panerai playing it down the middle. Kind of nice to see but not that nice.

Would they sell us a clear back case if we pay? Really this non hacking seconds is weird.

I would not have bought it if the caseback was solid!

Panerai has never been consistent here, particularly with the Submersible. You'll have watches with the same references number and some will have display casebacks and others solid. It seems like they have made solid casebacks the norm for all, if not most, Submersible models and all entry level models. It's the mid range and higher end Luminors and Radiomirs that get the display casebacks. That said, Panerai has almost no consistency so I am sure there are many exceptions to the rule I just gave.
My opinion is that aside from their super high end tourbillion models, most Panerai movements are nothing to look at anyway. |

To me, a solid case back is more in line with the DNA. Works fine for Rolex, too. ;-)

I find solid casebacks wear a bit more comfortably I know that’s not what we’re talking about, but just thought I’d throw it out there.

Some people like the case back and others don’t. It’s an individual preference but I don’t think Panerai needs to be for every single person’s choice.

+1 for beating fakes
I think there has also been some criticism of Panerai changing their movements (from hacking to non-hacking) without changing the reference number of the movement… using completely unfinished movements when previously they had some finishing… solid caseback makes it more difficult for us to assess what changes are being made to the movements underneath when cost cutting? |

I bought my 231 for the dial.
The caseback was a bonus.
