Enjoying my new watch when I got hit with a question I can’t answer

So as a two week old owner of a 124060 Submariner. I am absolutely loving the watch. Total dream watch…my first Rolex. I have been talking my wife’s ear about how great the watch is. Finally she put it on her wrist and said “it’s absolutely beautiful! So why don’t they make a smaller version for women?”
Uh…I have no idea

There’s the Tudor mini sub - or at least that is what my husband tried when I asked that. I was never too into it though (sold it since) and would rather have an explorer to scratch the sports itch

I’ve shown her every watch possible. She really likes the submariner but just smaller.

It’s something I too have wondered. They make a mid size YM 37mm and they used to make a “ladies” YM, I wonder why they never made a 36 sub etc..

Get her a 5 digit Sub. Wears much smaller IMO. Can easily be pulled off by a lady.

I think it’s like a lot of the posts here…. it’s what looks good on your wrist. I’m 5’9 there’s no way I’m pulling off a 43 mm watch (Maybe if I was younger but at 60 I think I would look rather silly. Almost Flavor Flav like. But again that’s just my opinion. Theres a lot of folks on this forum older than me and hipper than me that a 43 mm watch would look beautiful on).
I think she had a valid point. But maybe the market is just too small for smaller women who want the exact same look in a smaller watch

Women can wear 40 or 41mm with no problem. She can also try a 5 digit or a yacht master as mentioned above.

You should tell her women sport the sub all the time now in its current size. Same with GMTs. It’s fashionable.

If you ask anyone from Rolex i imagine the reply would be sothing along the lines of
"Why would they want a smaller sub when we have diamond laced DateJusts"

Given Rolex dont conform to modern trends I'd imagine theyre still stuck in the mindset of Range A for men and Range B for women

Agreed with above posters, have your wife try it on and see if she likes it! My 60 year old mom rocks both a PM GMT and PM Daytona in her rotation (both 40 mm watches). She has slight wrists but they still look good IMO.

Tudor has those mini subs from back in the day. I think they are 36mm. Pretty rad little watches. Total baby sister to the submariner vibe

Mini-Sub is 33mm.

There's a Lady-Sub, too, which is 28mm.

My wife has a Daytona, TT Sub and CHNR in rotation. I think they all look great on her. She has her ‘ladies size’ watches as well.

That’s why I got my ladies’ 29mm Yachtmaster over 20 years ago, because Rolex doesn’t make a Sub in women’s sizes. Rolex of course discontinued the 29mm and the mid-size 35mm, and now the smallest YM is a 37. If the 37mm is too big for her she may want to look at a preowned YM in that size.

I also got a vintage (1970s) Tudor Princess Submariner last year. I got the snowflake style, in blue (they also make black), and it has a Rolex case and oyster bracelet. It’s very cool, and fits perfectly at about 33mm. There was nothing at all like it when it came out. I’m not aware of any other watch company making an automatic dive watch with a rotating bezel for women back then. I wasn’t aware of the Tudor back then, either. There aren’t a lot of examples for sale, so I presume they didn’t produce a lot of them. The first professional style, rotating bezel watch for women that I was aware of was the Tag Professional with the link bracelet, but even that was later and, I believe, with a quartz movement.

Some women can pull off a 40-41mm Sub. I’m one who can’t. My husband has a Sub and a 16710. Lugs hanging over the edge of my wrist is neither a good look nor a good fit. Lucky for him!

My wife like the silver or white dials almost every time. She has a ladies yacht master, datejust and borrows my panda speedy which wears flatter and less too heavy. So 29, 36, 40mm? Lots of options. I like the idea someone mentioned about the 37 mm yacht master. They also used to make a 35mm version,

Women look sexy in a 40mm. My wife has a 36 OP but also wears my 39 OP and my 40mm sports models. She's 5'7 135 and they are not too big on her.

I see more and more women in the 40mm Rolexes over the last 10+ years.

I have a Daytona 116520 with a black dial, a BLNR jubilee and the 35mm YM and I love them all - and I'm an average size gal at 5'6". Debating how badly I want a ND Sub to round out my collection - I should check out the Tudor! I don't think I could go any bigger than 40mm though.

Just a guess to the OPs question since I’m not a diver. The Sub is or is supposed to be a dive watch which are supposed to be big. Rolex might think if they made it smaller it wouldn’t be considered a dive watch. Even though I’m sure only a small percentage of the total are actually used for diving, I have 3 Subs and don’t dive never did never have never will. But nonetheless it’s a dive watch but these days maybe just considered jewelry.

The answer is this… Rolex was always primarily a man’s watch company. What I mean by that is the overwhelming majority of the company’s resources and mindshare were dedicated to serving that particular demographic. In contrast, their women’s line was essentially a hobby when compared to their male book of business, roughly analogous to how Apple would compare its iPhone vs. AppleTV businesses.

The answer is pretty simple. The submariner watch was envisioned to be use for diving, particularly with a wetsuit. So the dial is large and it has a bezel with numbers to know your dive times. the most important thing is that it has the extendable clasp so it could fit over your wetsuit. In this regard, there was no point in making a specific one for women. My wife and I used to dive a LOT. I cannot imagine her wearing a lady specific diving watch with a small dial. Frankly, a larger dial than a sub would even be better. The best diving watch (not Rolex) have huge dials.
