1680 red writing doubt

Hi to all. I’m in search of The correct Red Writing dial for my 1680.
I don’t know what is The correct Mark: MK4 or MK5?
I talk about a 2,8M serial number.
My 1680 has a MK1 white, from around 1978.

If your 1680 is from 1978 - its too late to be a red submariner.

No, my sub is 2,8M serial number. About 1972/73.
I have a wrong dials MK1 white, from 1978.

Sorry I misread. TTG is right on mark.

They are not cheap.

Yes. If found, it would be as buying another watch.
You are better off trying to find a proper Red Sub with its dial and/or consider a luminova (service) Red Sub dial to place in yours.

That's not a MK 1 white dial btw. And I am not sure how you could date it to 1978 unless you have service paperwork indicating it was changed then. It's generally not possible to date white 1680's by dial type.

That one looks very bad. I think you will not find any bargain for a replacement red dial, only 10-15K unless damaged, relumed etc.
Maybe a red service dial?

I agree because a ‘72 1680 that goes in for servicing at RSC in ‘78 or later, and owner needs/wants a dial replacement, will get the current Mk. dial.

It is still authentic - just not 100% original.

Definitely in the 10-15k range. Most of the loose red sub dials that I have seen come up have some flaws.

there are several threads on TRF regarding the Luminova Red Submariner Service dials that are still available but only through Rolex Geneva. Sounds like there are a few hoops to jump through and you would have to contact Rolex Geneva directly. Most likely, they would require a full service on the watch. Certainly the cost is a little better and the results are quite nice IMHO. The benefit being working lume and all Rolex parts.

Yours is a mk2 ‘thin font’ version btw OP

£8-10,000 is right I’d say for a red….whites can be bought quite cheaply though if you look about - I bought two…one for £1200 and one for £1100 a year or so ago. £2500-3000 being what clued-up dealers ask.

I’d keep it as for now tbh . BTW funny thing about dials is they do occasionally surface cheaply as a seller might have replaced a slightly discoloured or heavily patinated dial (when they were not so lusted after), years ago via an independent watchmaker, lobbed it in a draw/or the box and forgotten about it and then found it, and in their mind it’s just surplus to requirements….

I picked up a gilt (not perfect, but fine) 6542 dial on eBay for £2750 in just that scenario (when dealers would have asked £12-15k or so for one in that condition)…..so don’t give up looking for a cheaper one esp. if you are content with a bit of discolouration/uneven patina/dial rub.

I personally wouldn’t enter into a £10k project though it’s not financially worth it and the mk2 service looks fine.
