Do you care about dial legibility?

I tend to gravitate towards the dials that are easier to read; however, some of the watches I like it is difficult to tell the time. Does dial legibility even matter if you really like a particular piece? I'm thinking it is something you can get used to.

Yes it does matter. That's one of the reasons I don't care for the Daytona. That and it not having a date function .

The Daytona is one of my least favorite Rolex’s besides the Day-Date. I don’t get whey everyone loves the Daytona, other than its super limited?

I was chatting with an AD in Vegas and her thought was the only reason peopl want it, is because it's hard to get it. She went on to say she think's it's a womens watch haha.

When they have nothing to sell, they just stop caring.

It’s human nature. People want (especially people with means) what they can’t have. The Daytona is an average watch at best, but when people with the most can’t purchase it, it becomes better than what it is.

Just my opinion of course.

As long as I can see the hands I'm good. I have a skeleton dial watch that is at my limit because the lume on the hands are basically non-existent and the hands also blend in. Other than that I'm fine.

Dial legibility is one of my non-negotiables. Which is why I still haven’t purchased a chronograph.

I was the same until I saw the 321.

It's difficult to explain why, but I can read this from accross the room.

I think it has mostly to do with the longer thinner lume plots and the white baton hands. Whatever the case, its one of it not the most legible watches I own and that includes divers

I typically prefer dials with high contrast and this one is super legible.

For me, this is one of the least desirable watches I’ve ever seen especially in gold (I can make an exception for platinum, maybe). I’ll never understand the love for the Daytona…

I’ve had a few Daytonas over the years when I tried to make it my daily. They never stuck. Now I recently added this YG Daytona as my first yellow gold watch and as a fun weekend watch. It’s simple to set, a neat contrasting dial and easy to read, and not as sparkly as a day date. I’m more of a sporty guy so this has been fun to own so far. Not for everyone I know.

Defeats the purpose of having a watch if you can't actually read it.... so yes, it matters to me.

If the dial isn't legible, why wear it? Accuracy and legibility are my primary requirements.

Yes, it matters a lot. Only watch that gets away not being easily readable is a Daytona.

I don't use my watches to tell time so there's that.

To me, dial legibility is a make or break factor. On the other hand, I have friends that don't even bother to set the time / date on their watch. To each their own!

I’m blown away at the number of people I come across in my line of work that wear extremely expensive watches that the time isn’t set correctly or they’re not even wound. They just wear them as jewelry

I had two Daytonas over the years and sold both.
Why…Because the legibility was poor.

I think most dials are legible except when the hands and dial are similar colors, like on some day dates. My Daytonas are legible but way less legible than my 16570 polar which seems like one of the most legible watches there is.

Dial legibility is critical, especially as I get older. I need glasses for everything within arm’s reach and if I can’t read the time without my glasses then there’s no point in owning it.

Which watches do you feel have the best legibility for someone who is near sighted? I'm beginning to have trouble reading close distances.

Well the best hands down is a big ol’ old school 44mm Panerai Luminor of some sort. I prefer the Luminor Marinas even though I can’t see the small seconds at 9 without my glasses. The polar Explorer II is great as well as the new 36mm Explorer because of the high contrast between the hands and the dial. And I have a black OG ETA Pelagos that is off the hook for visibility, I can see that thing glowing in the daylight.

This isn’t a comprehensive overview of the best available watches for presbyopia, just a small sample of what works for me. And while I don’t get a clear picture of any watch without glasses these show me good hand placement at a glance.

Just think differently:

Bad legibility is a good excuse to look at your watch just a little longer!

Not 100% sure, but the Tudor Heritage Ranger may have the largest dial, and longest hands, that Rolex or Tudor has ever made. Case is 41 but the bezel is pretty slim.
