Collectors, how do you decide what to wear?

Curious, for collectors out there with several automatic watches, how do you decide what to wear each day?

Do you rotate them so they all keep running or do you let them stop and reset them when it is time to wear?

Does anyone use a watch winder anymore?

I have about 5-6 that I try to keep running by winding every day but try to wear each one every two weeks or so. No watch winder but I have been pricing them lately.

I wear what I feel like wearing and I let them stop when I'm not wearing them. I also have a winder but don't bother with it.

all depending on where i'm going, and what i'm wearing.

sometimes i won't wear a watch for months i have 3-4 on me at a time then go and swap those for another 3-4 after a matter of weeks/months. Keeps them all exciting and new to me.

I had 5 watch winders going a few years ago and then I realized my porsche Design chronograph seemingly wore out more quickly as a result. Now I just rotate all my watches and wear them occasionally.

When I get a new watch I end up wearing it for several weeks before I put it in rotation. After that I swap watches every couple of days to sometimes twice a day it just depends. I only keep one watch on a winder and that is my Patek 5205R annual calendar. That’s kind of a pain to set. The rest are easy and take less than a minute so I don’t mind in fact kind of enjoy winding them and setting them when I put them back in rotation.

I have a few watch winders that I don’t bother using, I used to have an annual calendar Patek that was a pain to set, I used the winder for that. Now, I usually wear a watch for the entire week, so not a big deal to just wind it up and set the time.

I have several watches and winders and wear what I want, as long or short as I want. I do not think about wrist time, only does the watch work for me. At the point it does not work any longer then I just move on.

Sometimes it’s based on my activities planned for the day, sometimes based on outfit, sometimes because there’s something about the day that I associate with the watch. But most of the time it’s because I have it in my mind that I just want to wear that particular watch that day.

No winder and I don’t wind my watches when sitting idle, unless they haven’t been worn for like 3-4 months, but that hasn’t happened yet and I don’t foresee it happening often.

To dovetail off your question, what do folks do with watches that are more laborious to set, specifically AP RO. I have heard they can have a dainty crown and be delicate to set. To those who have it, do you keep it in a winder, like an AC just so it’s not a pain to set everytime, or is the delicate crown thing just a misconception?

When i get up each morning i view my collection and decide what i think will be appropriate that day. Then, if it's stopped ticking I'll spend the next couple of minutes winding it up and setting the correct date and time. I find this ritual particularly therapeutic and gives me a chance to 'engage' with the watch as afterall I'm unlikely to have another opportunity that day.
All this possibly sounds a little ott to many of you. Hopefully you'll not think me too sad.

I have certain watches that I wear for work but I try to rotate all my watches although some get more wrist time than others.

I might wear 6 different watches on a single day, or no change for like two months

I only have 4 so they all get worn pretty often, normally a week or so at a time

There is no strict rotation schedule, just one of them has a bit more pull to it than others at that time so it gets the green light

In well over 50 years being around watches and one time having over 40 watches, the only winder I ever felt I needed was the two attached to my arms called wrists.

I’ve got 5 Rolex, 1 omega, 6 Seiko.... it’s an absolute joy picking a different one each day.....I think the only time I restrict myself is if it hot outside I don’t wear any that have a leather strap or if I’m doing manual work..eg; the garden I’ll wear one of my Seiko beaters.

Just pick 1 bracelet watch and 1 strap watch for the week

Pick what I feel like on the day. Try to keep both going.

Make very conscious effort to rotate equally and not favour. I get variety from the two I pick for the week

Instinct on the day .
Around three or four in rotation at any given time .
Some almost daily ,some may not be worn for months .
Watch winder is a waste of time .

I stick my hand in the bucket, feel around, and choose whichever one is in the way.

I don't wear subs with tuxedos though.

If it has a date, I might keep it wound for impending wear. Sometimes I have just grabbed the no date options just for convenience sake. Depends on what I want to wear and the event. Not so many out door or big drinking events nowadays with covid tho.

I typically have five in play and five in the safe at any given time. Of the five in play, I have a triple watch winder to keep them ready to go. I swap most days.

I’ve tried having certain watches for certain occasions/attire but I end up wearing whatever I fancy regardless of the event or attire.
