47mm - Joined The Dark Side
It was time. I knew one day I would make the leap from a 44m to a 47mm. And today was the day. Just bought a 00422. Love the sandwich dial, 3 day power reserve, the hand-wound calibre P.3001, the display case back, and bumped out crystal. It also has a seconds reset function where you can reset the second hand instantly back to zero and you can move the hour hand independently from the minute hand for quick time-zone changes.
It's a stunner. |

The three-day power reserve is a nice complication and putting in on the back keeps the dial uncluttered.

Congrats - bold first 47mm choice given the bulk of the 422! Most go for the thinner 372 or fiddy.
I'd recommend a few custom thick 26/26 straps with flat buckles - they really help to balance the 422 on the wrist. |

Congratulations, epic piece in my opinion.
I absolutely love the Panerai 422, had one for about a year and moved it on to make way for something else, but will be re-acquiring as I have about a dozen straps to go with it. Here's my greatly missed 422. |

422/372 are two of the best Panerai have produced IMHO. At 47mm they are potent on the wrist. My thinking is as part of a collection they are great. The case/bezel/crystal/face are fabulous. I had the 422 when it first was out. I now enjoy the 372 as part of the collection. The OP strap is nice! Hagwe

I was searching for a 422 for a couple of months and noticed the asking price was typically $6,500 and up (this watch sells retail for $10K so that was to be expected). Also, I wanted to buy it through eBay because I have used their watch authentication process in the past and really like it. It's free, quick and easy with zero hassles.
After spending a lot evenings burning the midnite oil (that really is the fun part of the hunt), I finally bought my 422 on eBay for $4,000. It went through the eBay authentication process and was shipped to my home with no issues. The reason why I was able to get the 422 at such a great price is because of the following: -It did not come with the original box, screwdriver, papers or store bought receipt (none of that matters to me anyway - I just wanted a bargain). -It was being sold by a seller who does a lot of estate sale stuff (he had over 12,000 items sold) so he did not want to hold on to it very long. - It was the week after Christmas when I bought it. (Great time of the year to buy a luxury item) - He was accepting offers (he wanted $6.5K and I offered $4K and he took it) even I was shocked by this! -It's a hard sale due to the 47mm size. Most people won't consider buying a watch that big. If you are on the fence about getting a 47mm 422 Panerai- take the plunge. t's a stunning piece of mechanical art. |
