If a certain model is discontinued do prices go up alot?

Curious of a certain model such as a palm dial 36mm datejust gets discontinued would that model go up alot in value? Or something small like 2 grand?

Well today some think that Rolex watches are nothing but £$€ objects and nothing more. While many buy there watches to own and wear irrespective of whether being discontinued and prices gó up or down.

This seems to have been the case with the Milgauss, which is one of the more recent discontinued models.

I bought one below retail before all the crazy watch price things happened and now it is selling at nearly 3x what I paid.

Yet TRF almost categorically talks trash about the Milgauss.

Nope. Prices still continue to fall. This is despite the boom in bitcoin prices.

If they discontinue a palm or fluted dial, maybe, temporarily.

In the short run, prices won't see a dramatic change. probably not $2k

In the very long run, unadjusted for inflation, they all sell for more than original. But this is over a very long period of time.

However, if a hard to obtain piece such as the Hulk, yes prices go higher. But not always on hard to get professional models such as the Daytona 116500LN - it stayed the same as the 126500 was introduced.

Also...keep in mind that the demand prior to discontinuation doesn't really tell you much about demand (and pricing) after discontinuation. The BLRO is very popular right now and if it was discontinued, I have no doubt prices would trend upwards quickly.

The Hulk on the other hand was relatively unpopular when it was a production model. I have owned my 116610LV since 2012 and I remember always seeing the Hulks in the windows at the AD, while the black dial was harder to get. After discontinuation, suddenly the demand markedly increased, as did the price on the secondary market.

Depends on the model. Hot models can jump at least in the short term. Less desirable stuff tends to lose value as people lose interest in it for that shiny new thing.

Prices are already so crazy, that they probably won’t rise significantly, unless they are highly sought after models.

I would not say the Hulk was “unpopular when it was a production model” or its popularity was sudden after its end of production. While the Hulk wasn’t popular at first, by 2017 it was more popular than the standard Sub Date LN and by 2019/2020 ( just before discontinuation in Sept 2020) it was very popular and sold for several thousand more than a standard Sub LN on the grey market.

It got a big bump after disco’d but it was certainly one of the more popular sport models (right there with a BLNR) before its production run ended.

There are those who think everything Rolex discontinued is worth a fortune. This usually is momentarily self-fulfilling as these folks run out and pay premium prices for those discontinued models/features.

After a while they are usually forgotten, as they were to begin with - the usual reason for discontinuing them.

Its popularity increased over time, but certainly at the end demand was driven by the rumors that it was about to be discontinued. From 2011-2014 the Hulk was literally in every AD window in Denver. I was offered a discount on the Hulk vs the black dial repeatedly because it was a slow mover.

I agree with you on its relative unlopularity back then. I don’t agree that it was unpopular during its entire production run and only became popular after its run ended.

Hasn’t the Palmdale already at least unofficially been discontinued? Going up a few thousand dollars would be a lot. I doubt that would happen. I think almost every model like it’s discontinued goes up a little bit, my only be a few hundred dollars, might be such a little amount you won’t really notice when you’re searching to buy one.

Somebody mentioned Milgauss. I don’t think those really went up much when they got discontinued. You can still find them under retail if you know where to look.

In theory those that are waiting for the model may end up going grey once it’s discontinued. That drives demand slightly, the grey dealers seeing an opportunity, react or over react and increase prices. The initial uptick in demand wears off due to higher prices and then the price settles to a slightly higher level than current market value. IMHO

One specific Rolex model that was thought of as unpopular at the time during its brief less than three years run was the 116600 SD4K. I think its dramatic appreciation after it was discontinued is at least partially due to relative scarcity. However INHO it’s really a neat watch and is perhaps my all time favorite Rolex diver.

Another example of significant appreciation due to relative scarcity is the 114300 OP39 with white dial that was discontinued after only a one year run. On the other hand the 214270 Exp39 has appreciated only minimally after it was discontinued just prior to the introduction of the two Explorer models that replaced it.

SD4k (116600). Rare. If you’re looking for a discontinued watch that’ll likely continue to rise over the years.
