For the Submariner, I went with the 2008 16613Lb, gorgeous watch, it's a Submariner and it has a beautiful blue dial! Winner!

Lately, toying with either and SD43 or a Black Submariner, I just know I'd end up wearing it the majority of the time and end up selling everything else.

To prevent this, I purchased a nice Rolex GMT Master 16700 Pepsi on Jubilee, so if the feeling ever overwhelms me, I'll purchase an oyster bracelet and the black insert and close enough...whew!

I've got these four, and have dallied in selling the 16613 for the 16610 Submariner and selling my beautiful 18238 Day-Date either for a pristine 5 or 4 digit Submariner or the Anniversary SeaDweller....my son would kill me for selling the Day-Date.

I may still pull the trigger, but the Blue Submariner actually gets tons of wrist time, it's a great piece and I'd regret selling it or the Day-Date immediately.

A Patek 5135 is in the books next however....

Totally get it. Except the ever selling it part. I wanted a sub since I was a kid pretty much. My heroes wore them (Jacques Cousteau, James Bond, yada). It didn't help that in my 20's I learned to dive and wrapped my entire career around marine exploration. Of course by then, no one wore a dive watch for any practical reason (or any reason at all). Still wanted a sub. Finally around 6 years ago I felt financially comfortable enough to buy one and it hasn't left my wrist since.

I did look at other Rolexes of course... But I always asked myself would I like wearing them more than my sub. The answer was always "no".

Rolex Submariner : A maddening watch for a maddening personality

I’d like to reiterate what Neal’s wife said, “OP, don’t you dare sell that watch again!” Great thread, BTW.

I get it. My first Rolex was an 116610LN and even though I have since added a couple of other watches to the collection I still end up going to the Sub first on most days.

Had a 114060 and wore it everywhere. Thought it was perfect. Then the 124060 came out.

I pretended I didn’t prefer it but eventually sold the 114060 and got a 124060. Loved this watch and again wore it non stop.

Eventually picked up an LN GMT and decided I preferred it (I still love it) and thought both were too similar in my small collection. I eventually sold the 124060.

Missed my sub immediately and regretted it everyday.

Managed to get a 16610lv and think it might be my perfect watch. Can’t see me getting rid of this one.

You are absolutely correct in how the sub makes one feel. I loved it way before I was old enough to realize what a Gem it is.

I really love the Maxi Dial. Been tempted to get one and swap in a black bezel like you have. Beautiful watch.

What a perfectly timed thread! Purchased my first Rolex (black dial sub date) back in 2013. Bought, traded and sold nine Rolex watches since then, including that first watch. It’s taken me quite some time, but I’m now very pleased with a collection comprising a 2019 Pepsi, 2020 Hulk, and on Tuesday I will be collecting the 126610LN from my fantastic AD. There are so many brilliant Rolex models, and I’m on the list for something else as well, but the Sub is just iconic. It was a tough call between the aesthetically superior No-date, or the more functional Date, but I’ve gone for the latter as I favour the utility.

Will post pics here later in the week, but thanks everyone for heightening my excitement levels ahead of Tuesday!

Better not buy an Explorer 1 because you’re gonna go through this all over again. Sometimes I look at it and go “all else is supplemental”. It’s a dangerous watch!

The Oyster Perpetual is cooler than the Explorer because it's the watch that (didn't) go to the top of Everest before the Explorer was even thought of.

Have to say it makes a massive difference to me. Aesthetics of the maxi plots on earlier subs with the 5 digit charm and wearability.

You think the sub creates an itch? Hell, vintage subs become just rashy.
