Insurance Copies

For some reason this distant memory came to the forefront of my mind last night.

Years ago I was having dinner with a very wealthy colleague from Macau. Another person at the table noticed and complimented his Rolex. The watch owner thanked him and explained that it was a very expensive replica. An "insurance copy" he called it. He then explained that in his social circle, it was common to buy an authentic watch, keep it in the safe, and only wear the replica insurance copy. It was apparently a huge faux pas for anyone to wear a replica for which they didn't have the authentic in the safe.

Personally, this completely defeats the purpose of wearing a masterpiece like a Rolex.

Just curious, has anyone else come across this practice?
