I heard similar from my AD. they didn't all get used for returns but they used to circulate and be reused - somewhat.

I'm sure Rolex did what any other responsible organisation would do. Assess the environmental impact of continuing to use plastic containers, some of which were reused, versus alternatives. There was probably a cost component looming large as well. I'm sure the cardboard containers will be recycled also, as opposed to some of them being reused.
