Milgauss gv
How many of you remember when the MG GV first came out? It was impossible to find. They were selling for $13K-$16K. Feel for the guys how bought them at premium back then. Slowly the came available and premium was gone. Opinions on why it did not hold its premium.
I was able to purchase a used Y series white dial Daytona from my AD at the time. The AD took it in on trade for a MG GV, from a big client. I would imagine his client regrets that trade. |

Why did it not hold it's premium? If I had to guess it was just pure speculation same as when the 16622 was released in 1999. I don't have to find the receipt to remember there were no discounts on that one. But it never did spike the way the Milguass did. I don't believe the Platinum Yachtmaster in 1999 ever saw a spike in price anything like the Milgauss did in 2009. Not sure what list price was but found the receipt! List price at the time was $6575.

Speculation and greed. It was one of the first over-hyped new models, maybe because Rolex promoted it as an anniversary model. Bought mine in 2013 for about 20% off retail, just because I liked it. Sold it a few years ago for what I paid for it, and now it could be sold for much more. Sold it to a nice guy, though, so it's all good.

I had understood when the Milgauss GV was first released that it was an anniversary model and would be produced for a limited time. I think that was the impetus for the demand. I would also say it was one of the first quirky models with its green-edged glass and the re-introduction of the orange lightning bolt second hand. Since then, we have had some other watches that are non-traditional (grape, turquoise, etc), but I think the Milgauss GV was among the first modern Rolex models to appeal to buyers wanting a different looking Rolex.

I bought mine December 2008 for £3600 ish from the AD. I think the VAT was 15% if remember correctly.
They were going for between 7-10k as apparently Rolex was having trouble making the green sapphire glass. All of which was utter nonsense of course. That was the first time I saw the rumour mill affecting price. |

Hey, they're currently going for over $10 -14K so they aren't cheap. I bought mine a couple of years ago from the AD at MSRP; I love the watch. IIRC they just took a big price increase for MSRP as well.

I remember hearing it would be a limited production watch. I purchased one in 2008 with the hope of that to be true. Was not true |

I bought one in 2010. It was my first Rolex. Can't recall the price. Maybe $7k. Sold it a few years later. Wish I hadn't.
