Most with a vintage should decline a new case because it affects originality and value. Rolex does not fix sealing surfaces, but there are good watchmakers who will take the time and effort to resurface sealing areas.

Wow. Love this watch and heirloom story. Those crown guards are meaty!

Found another pic from the road trip to NYC before taking it in for service. Hoping these next 8 weeks go by fast!

Again a great looking watch. I did notice the end links are quite lose which is a thing with the oval link bracelets. It produces that jangly sound like wind chimes because there is no tube inside the end link through which the spring bar will pass. I switched mine out for the Swiss version. Keeps them tight against the head of the watch and solved the problem. I think for your SS watch the end links would be 550s. For me it was wearability over originality but I do still have the original end links too. Just a thought…

Maybe I was being a little overboard on the wind chimes… Definitely a rattling metal sound. Fair enough? Yes, it is something you can do yourself but you can also have your local AD or a watch shop in general do it. You can find them on EBAY and there are companies that make reproductions, also found on EBAY. They should fit the fat 2mm spring bar. You can definitely purchase through the AD but they will be quite expensive, and at that point you may want to consider a new bracelet. Give them a call and ask. I did. Decided I did not want to pay $1250 through the RSC for the two tone end links for my bracelet. Paid a quarter of that price through EBAY. The all steel versions are much easier to find. Search "rolex 550 end links". Good luck with your beautiful watch!

Before you make any decision whether to authorise Rolex NY to undertake any works on the watch be sure you understand the precise extent of those works and how such works may affect the historical collectability and character of the watch.
For example the replacement of the hands with new luminova hands is not desirable nor is the replacement of the dial with a new dial. There are great people out there who will offer refurbishment services whilst retaining the historical vintage integrity of the watch.

Don't loose that original soft edge plexi (for a hard edged service one) in any work it undergoes....it will de-scratch fine with a blob of polywatch and 20mins elbow grease.
Nb - I really wouldn't use any RSC for this personally.

Got me thinking Dan and Kingface...thinking I might sub-contract out to a 'bot (are they cheap?) to do my auto-responses on the drearysome subjects of over-polishing, n.o.s., making quick bucks, sock-draw-bounty, is this strap a nice colour match, what is considered vintage etc, etc. ;-)
