Smh just found out about Rolex King Midas

Shame on me. A solid Rolex collection and I only this week found out that a Rolex King Midas (and a Cellini) version exist. What a gorgeous piece hut now that vintage watches are coming back the price is too much

Just be aware that the King Midas is not water proof at all, not even for a shower.

Also no shame, we all learn something new as collectors every now and then, sometimes more frequently sometimes less. But for me that is the fun of it.

Elvis was given a King Midas in 1970:

and it is displayed at Graceland complete with water damage, thought to have been caused by wearing it in a hot tub:

I had the chance to try my friend white gold King Midas and I have to say that the watch is massive, weight a ton but it has is charm because is so unique,
but if I was getting one would definitely be the white gold and the one with written MIDAS on the dial instead of that terrible Cellini in fake italics font

Once upon a time there was THE Midas, the watch which was made from solid yellow or white gold. The only difference between these was, that there was only a far less WG ever been manufactured. In just some years later, Rolex made a slight change on the bracelet, but it doesn't effect the fact, that even the second series was also made from pure gold, and these watches looked all the same for the first sight. These and only these watches ARE the Rolex MIDASes, like the one on this picture.

After this, Rolex decided to make money from a georgeus watch, and they started to sell cheap fashion "watches" with the name "Cellini" and made from far-far less gold. The only reason why these "watches" use to call "Midas" in the second hand market as these "watches" looks like the Midases, while in my opinion they were not more then cheap inhouse fakes of the original Genta's artwork.

That's the reason why the very first Midases are selling for huge money, mostly if these have the original and magnificent "ancient greek vase" looking box. These boxes are in itself are worths a fortune.

I was offered a white gold King Midas with the Cellini dial--I think it was a 3rd generation Midas--for a little over scrap in 2019.

It's only this past year that these 1970s gold watches have become hot again.

Yes it really contour the wrist, I would say is very comfortable, if you’re ok with the weight of pure white gold

Good question! Presumably there is no such thing, as an 18K (0.750 gold content) white gold alloy contains nickel, zinc, platinum, etc. If so, the only pure gold available would be 24K yellow gold.

Maybe not in Europe but I think selling 1970s gold bracelet watches by scrap price is pretty common in the US particularly by trade dealers. In fact, this offer was from a Texan pawnshop on Chrono24.

For a while old Piagets were sold almost at scrap price.
