I prefer the 36. Photo from Worn and Wound.

The 40 might just appeal to bigger wrists. The dial space means it looks a bit less balanced.

Actually now I may have changed my opinion, which had been in favour of the 36 despite it's very narrow bracelet and slightly dainty case. The 40mm looks about right here, excited for an in person viewing.

As a rugged field watch I prefer the smaller size, so it does not catch or snag on things like branches, rocks, vines and backpacks, etc. For its intended use the compact size is an advantage. For a pilot's watch I want big and then some to be able to read it at a glance with my hands on the controls. Design size has a purpose.

I prefer the 39. The 36 is a bit too small for my 7.25" wrist. I prefer the Explorer text on the bottom of the dial to match the other sports models as well. It looks too crowded on the top of the dial.

The 40mm looks much better than the 36mm, but Rolex should have went to 42mm.

The ‘36 crowd would swear a 36.01246mm is a dinner plate, and will never accept anything else. A 42mm Explorer would have been in line with most other field watches.

The number of men here insecure in their watch size is hilarious. Preference for 40 or more is fine if that’s your thing, but the absolute conviction some have on what constitutes a men’s watch is curious. Fortunately, these comments can’t rewrite history. Many great men have worn a 36 over the past 75+ years.

36mm crowd reminds me of those guys wearing a smedium suits and skin tight leggings/jeans 10 years ago. And they still want to make things smaller.

Lol I agree. Lots of very strong opinions. I have the 36mm 124270 and it’s pretty much taken all the wrist time from my submariner. Never had a watch I enjoyed more. But the 40mm prob looks better on other some peoples wrists. Just want to see lots of explorers out there of any size.

Are you sure the Explorer 40 is 40mm or not 38.5mm-39mm?
