Higher end brand than Rolex.
Their steel models are more expensive than similar Rolex as well. |

No, between Rolex and Patek. They make complications and finish there movements to different levels. They have some very high end watches, not just the Alpine Eagle.

For me this Chopard with this dial is a killer. I love the finish and the details on the dial.

Chopard uses sapphire gongs and they sound magnificent. So, yes, meeting and beating Patek. |

Msrp is what manufacturer thinks it’s worth. Market price is what market thinks it’s worth. Lots of watches have msrp and market prices that I disagree with.

The Chopard does sound terrific, but I don't think Chopard can beat Patek's long history of MR excellence. |

I love this watch, not enough to buy it though. I would put the AE easily at the AP level!

I have the steel AE and it trumps my Rolex's in finishing in every aspect all day.

Of course, wearability wouldn't even be on the radar of such collectors. And people can do as they like. While wearing a watch may be surprising to you, there are people who buy watches to enjoy them on the wrist. MRs have NO water resistance, this means tropical, humid weather over time, or wearing on a rainy day, is not good for a MR. A watchmaker who works on these watches confirmed for me he sees moisture damage to MRs, even from humid weather over time. A rep for a high end brand even suggested using desiccants inside whatever case or safe one uses to store one's watches. I do that and it seems quite reasonable. Chopard's MR delivers excellent, patek-equalling or beating sound and you can actually wear the watch every day if you like! AP's Super Sonnerie MRs are similar in this factor of wearability and they also have very nice sound. I think watchmakers intend for their watches to be worn and I would encourage collectors to wear them--I think people who don't are missing out on a nice experience. But I respect people who think differently, there's room for everyone. |

Thank you! The "ordinary" versions are very nice too but I specifically chose this one for the thinner case, thinner bezel and no date. The LUC movement was a bonus...

The finsihing on alpine eagle is certainly better than rolex but that doesnt justify the price difference in my view.
I think they just want to position them selves at a higher price point. Although my guess would be this difference will be much smaller in secondary market. |
