No love for Omega PO!

What is it about the Planet Ocean that it doesn't seem to get much respect? Is it the Rodney Dangerfield of Omega Sport watches?

I don't see many "incomings" about Planet Oceans. Most talk is about the Seamaster 300m (SMP300) or the Speedy. I get the 300SMP, it's a great price point and the Speedy is the classic Moonwatch. The new white dial version is a perfect SS Daytona wannabe.... and it's available. But not a lot of mention of the PO. Why is that?

I have looked various renditions over the years but never pulled the trigger for one reason or another. Looking at some PO options right now. Great choices out there on bracelet and deployant strap which wear more comfortable than the bracelet.

Would like to hear your thoughts on the PO...

It’s a widely owned and cherished watch, so much better than the Seamaster. I still own the original PO XL with shark cage mesh bracelet and it’s still one of my favorite watches. If you don’t like Planet oceans, you don’t like dive Watches!.

I've had the original Planet Ocean since 2015 ish and it's a fantastic watch. My only minor complaint is that it's a bit chunky, and not even as chunky as the current versions. Still, you feel it on the wrist.

It was my daily until I replaced it with the current Speedmaster on 2021 when it was first released. Love them both.

I have the summer blue. I love the orange bezel iteration as well but too big for my wrist

The problem with the PO is the current generation where the are proportions are off. The original 2500 movement at 42mm is still the best proportioned watch. Until Omega returns the PO to the 42mm diameter and 14mm thick, a lot of people are going to get something else.

Yes, I much prefer the proportions of the older gen. Love the metas movement but the sizing is too much for a lot of people.

I think they look terrific. I recently tried on a couple. The black dial with orange accents really caught my eye. But to me they are still a bit thicker than maybe they need to me. And since I already own an SD43 I felt it was a bit too similar to have both in the collection. But no doubt the dials are really sharp.

And I really feel they are missing the boat by having a 43.5, a 39.5, but no 41.5 which to me is the ideal size for a watch like this. The older 2500 had the best size and proportions of the line, even though that wasn't perfect either.

Agree. I tried one on and it just didn't look right to me on the proportions.

I want the PO to be flatter on the wrist. Lose the sapphire display case back which parks the weight of a heavy watch onto a small patch on your wrist. Make the caseback metal and make it flat so the weight spreads out over the wrist. I think the PO is overdue for a refresh.

Absolutely love it! Years ago I had the original 45.5mm model which was sold.

This is easily my favorite watch in the collection:

The liquid metal PO's were soooo good.

I have a good friend who just bough the new beige PO in Honolulu and it is simply fantastic.

Very nice photos and great taste in watches. That original Planet Ocean is the best looking one IMHO.

Highly relevant thread for me, as I’ve flip/flopped on the 39.5 vs 43.5 versions for the past several days. Nearly bought a 39.5, then 43.5, then back to pulling trigger on 39.5, then considering a return / swap back for 43.5… highly unusual for me as typically I buy and hold and don’t flip/flop on interest. The thing with the PO is that it is very “3D” and dynamic in how it presents on the wrist.

For me, the final determining factors are how it a) feels b) works c) looks in a mirror d) fits my lifestyle. The 39.5 is closer to a daily size that I’d generally prefer. As a model overall, more appealing to me than a Sub…hands-down. As for Omega, my favorite modern offering.

I wish that Omega would apply the tech of the bezel action of the PO and the coin edge design onto seamaster line.

The bezel action on the seamaster line is so rackety and that scallop edge bezel is just a pain to grip and fiddle with.

I love the PO line, just haven’t found one in a size that I like.

I wish the 39.5 was 40.5 but I’ve come around to it being better than the smp 300 for MY wrist size of 6.6 or so. And I’m normally a member of the thick police but it’s ok on wrist, doesnt wear as thick as specs

I have 45.5 PO chronograph and I love it.
However, those are big watches and as such, don’t have a big audience. On the other hand, I do have an 8” wrist and can pull it off, but that’s just me.
Specs wise those way better then 300m.

I have this watch as well and it quickly became one of my favorites. The rubber strap makes it very comfortable and to me the proportions are perfect. Not to mention that the color is so different from anything else I own.

I could pull off either of those sizes. To me it would come down to the movement. I like the movement in the 39.5 better than the 43.5. The movement in the 39.5 has a quickset date while the movement in the 43.5 has a quick adjust hour hand (time zone function). I much prefer the quickset date, but I also understand a lot of people likely don’t care about this. Both movements are great, so you really can’t make a wrong choice unless perhaps one size fits you much better than the other.

Same. Agree on the quickset date too, especially as I have a couple GMTs, the quickset feature here is more useful.

Nothing better than the original PO 45 XL with the factory OEM Shark Cage mesh bracelet with its own designated model number

The quickset date is more prone to problems than adjust hour. Maybe you read my thread on OF regarding Tresor problem and Archer’s answer. He was right.

Interesting. On the OF I’ve seen significantly more issues with the 8900 movement… that the jumping hour is more problematic…

Not that either seems to have worrisome defect rates given the volumes of both movements. Even with comparably more problems with the 8900 I would not look at that as driving the decision. I think both are great movements.
