60 years later strong family resemblance
Nearly 60 years later the Rolex 5513 1965 gilt DNA shines through. Originally ordered a Panda Daytona, but I was offered the black dial version instead after an 18 month wait and as the Stones song goes, “you don’t always get what you want, but you get what you need.” Couldn’t be happier.

Two absolutely knockout references and with this being the vintage section I particularly like the 5513

This watch was a gift from my great uncle who bought it in Miami in the 1960s. Unfortunately the dial was severely damaged. Rik Dietel had it refurbished in London. They did a brilliant job. Not cheap or quick, but it really looks like NOS now. Some will disagree with my decision to refurbish, but I’m very pleased with the results.
Process used is the same as Rolex used 60 years ago. The “gold” lettering is not printed like in the cheap Vietnamese dials, it’s actually etched through the glossy black dial so the metal backplate shines through. My photos don’t do justice to the work, but looking at the dial at an angle you can see the lettering slightly depressed. |
