Sizeable msrp differences USA and Canada

Was talking with a friend about his new Explorer 40 and ended up discovering that the Canadian msrp is substantially lower right now. Recent currency movements have put a DD 40 Everose 5k less Canadian and an Explorer 40 1k less, as examples.

The problem is where in Canada can you go and just buy one? Great, but only if you don’t live in Canada then it’s not so good.

Unusual but I just checked and confirmed a $3k (USD) difference for a yellow gold DD… of course the reality is the purchase price in Canada will still be roughly the same because a) the cost to exchange currencies means you will not get the advertised spot rate when you convert and b) in nearly every province vs nearly every state, the Canadian sales tax is much higher.

Taken together, your total cost will be essentially the same…

Another example, DD 40 yellow, diamond bezel and dial is 12k CAD less direct exchange.

Seems around 10% across the lineup. You’d think there’d be some way to work this too ones favour.

Currency difference and sales tax are the biggest differences.

Canada has Provinces each Province sets its own sales tax rates. Canada has a national sales tax called the GST 5%. Alberta has no Provencal tax only GST so point of sales total taxes 5% - Ontario has 8% plus GST total13 % , BC 7% plus GST total 12%. Some Provinces are 15 % total.

Presumably, there are sales taxes in the United States both state and the taxes. Prices have always been cheaper in Canada. Where I live we get American tourists coming up on the cruise ships and they gobble up any Rolex’s that are available.

I would also imagine we see a price increase on MSRP here in Canada if exchange keeps tanking. I'm assuming dealers pay for their purchases in USD so they'd just pass along their cost increase to the retail buyer. Although I'm not sure what currency AD's would pay to Rolex, just assuming it's USD - maybe it's Euros?

You are going to get hit with higher sales tax. Ontario is 13% and that’s mostly average. Quebec and BC are higher. Can’t remember off the top of my head.

A reply below shows this isn’t country wide

The difference in price has currency difference factored in

I believe Rolex uses its national currency, the Swiss Franc CHF

I would assume Rolex looks at currency shifts in relation to CHF to stabilize revenue, could be wrong if someone knows for sure please let us know

Alberta seems to be the winner

I believe most Americans are paying 7% sales tax where it’s applied so actually that’s another 2% savings in Alberta

I don’t know where you got that information from but that’s not correct. Canada has a 5% GST. The provinces have their own sales tax. Some Provences have no sales tax some have. I posted a chart. Some provinces charge separately plus the GST some harmonize it and it’s known as HST.

Living in Alberta, I can say that there are precious few options for Rolex dealers. The lists here are long. The local ADs seem to favour locals but who really knows what they do / do not like. The ones I deal with do maintain lists as they can recite back to me what's on my list.

What can you tell us about tax rebates? Do foreigners qualify and what about within the country, if an Ontarian went to Alberta eg?

If someone went from Ontario to Alberta and purchased something for personal use they would just pay the GST . If someone from Ontario purchased something on the Internet , direct order, and had it sent to them from Alberta, they would have to pay the Ontario provincial tax plus the GST.

That’s great to know.

What about Americans or foreigners, can they get the taxes back, like some talk about with European taxes?

Allocation in Canada, as has been alluded to, is atrocious. Even loyal customers have a hell of a time. And if you're not a resident of Canada (sometimes even a resident of the town/city your AD is located in), you're SOL.
