Hi All

I'm hoping to pick your brains a bit about fountain pen troubleshooting.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife gave me a lovely Waterman. Unfortunately, the nib is very "skippy" particularly on the downstrokes, the initial line of letters and if I'm starting a new line. A look under a x20 magnifying lens suggests that the prongs of the nib are aligned correctly and I've tried flushing it through a couple of times during filling. Although the pen writes better, it's still not perfect.

The other day, I tried forcing ink through using the piston mechanism in the filler which I could depress about 1/3 of the way before ink showed on the nib despite the fact that the level had not dropped at all in the filler.

Ink used; Diamine raw sienna.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?

First is to determine the possible causes. As a first set switch to a Waterman cartridge and see if the problem continues.

Is there an issue with "baby's bottom" on the nib tipping material at all?

You Tube has a lot of videos on adjusting nibs that show several issues including the one you mention.

But do be careful. Typically the adjustments can be done by a novice, just follow the advice in the vids closely and take your time. That FP will last a lifetime so it deserves patience.

Yep try some manufacturers ink and if you still have issues, go very slow with the repair. That's the only thing that's saved me from screwing up royal learning this hobby

I don't think so. Although I'm enjoying the irony of having a baby's bottom in the house that I'm actively encouraging to spew brown liquid!! (Sorry, long night with the little one)
