But, the “article” felt more like paid advertising with a touch of “too thick!” thrown in to keep their “credibility”. It’s always entertaining to see Hodinkee writers squirm to say positive things about a watch that doesn’t fit their ideal mold of 34-36mm, thin, delicate and vintage.

Don’t think this is entirely fair, but I will say this: the comment on the watch being too heavy on the bracelet was dismissed as being because the author favours straps. Being a Black Bay owner, the things could definitely do with being 30g lighter - and they’re top heavy to boot (even on bracelet). I feel more criticism could be levelled here.

It’s interesting seeing that Tudor is a major sponsor of HODINKEE (prominent on web, in app and in podcast). I don’t doubt there is a definitive separation between sales and editorial, but do wonder if true objectivity is possible given the situation. Would be interesting to hear the author’s take on this.

I tried a Black Bay on for the first time this morning. I noticed the weight.
Editorially I think Hodinkee is putting itself in a difficult - if commercially successful - place. Take Oris for example. They sell Oris brand watches from the site and carry Oris brand advertising. I feel it unlikely that this doesn't influence the editorial placement of Oris watches, especially on 'pick' lists. So Tudor is not the only example.

Also, the journalism is predominantly of the opinion variety. So while it may be thorough, considered and earnest, it cannot really be objective. Still, you've gotta make a buck, right?

I am an owner of the Black Bay GMT and found the article to be informative. I always read the reviews with a grain of salt knowing that the watch companies do advertise on a lot of these sites and some even sell. No issue there if the articles are objective and deal with specifics. I do not find the Black Bay to be too thick nor too large but I have a 7.75 wrist. I almost always read the case is too thick, to who, is my question. I think most of the reviews give us a good starting point to understand a watch or brand but go see for yourself and compare watches of similar prices and specifications.

Important point and you’re spot on - HODINKEE is a blog, first and foremost. Top quality blog, but a blog nonetheless.
