…your thoughts on the Explorer 36?

Just for info, I waited about six weeks for this to come in.

The 36 mm is my first Rolex, and the first watch I’ve owned that is smaller than 38 mm. I have smaller wrists, so the size fits me perfectly. I’m sure the 39 mm would look fine too, but I appreciate that 36 is the classical reference size. It’s versatile and the size makes an already low-profile Rolex even more understated, which is a big plus for me.

Beautiful! I’ve been hemming and hawing on this piece for over a year. Last week I tried it on for the 3rd time and finally told my AD that I’d like one.
I’m actually considering moving my Sub41 and replacing it with this??

Get it first, then make the decision. However for me, I took the Explorer over the current sub. Explorer 36 is very close to perfection, while the sub’s ceramic bezel, bulky case and massive clasp just misses the mark. So different from 4 and 5-digit subs.

Agree. I will get the Explorer first and see how I feel. I have a rather large collection, including a couple of GMTs and I’m at the point where I don’t want to just accumulate if that makes sense?

If you like the classic look, supreme comfort, and ability to wear anywhere without attracting unwanted attention it can’t be topped. But it’s not for everyone.

36mm has been a ladies size for a few years now. Get the 40mm.

On its own, the 36 is a perfect size watch. However, given that all my other watches are 39-42, it's always an adjustment to go from a "normal" size to a small size watch. At first, I don't think it's an issue. But now that I have the Explorer 40, it makes more sense given everything else in my collection. On the other hand, if all your other watches are say DJ 36 etc that are 36 - 39 mm, then it fits perfectly into your collection. In all honesty, I think 36 size looks great on men, especially those with slender wrists like myself.

One additional note, I loved the extreme taper of the 36 bracelet that you don't get on the 40.

I have the 114270 and it’s an absolute keeper. It might be my favorite in my collection because of the sheer comfort of it.

The taper is identical on the 36 vs 40. It’s the same ratio.

I went with the 40mm to start with and the fit was great on my wrist. After about a month, I started to feel like the dial was just too big. Sold it and now have a 124270 and love it. There's no doubt that it's small, but it is so comfortable to wear. The only downside is that it started losing about 30 seconds a day and had to be sent to Rolex under warranty. I had it back in about 5 weeks and it's running about +1 second a day.

Thank you for everyone’s comments. This reference and my whole collection will be handed down to my brother one day.

Although this reference has been described as ‘dainty’ the bracelet and clasp make it feel rather robust and purposeful.
