This. Rolex has quite a few watches that they can release to send scales back through the roof easily.

What do I think of the SS Skydweller? I saw the pictures and then called my AD to order one. With the blue dial, thank you.

I wish I would have about 12 hours ago when I saw the news at 8am this morning, now I have to call my AD in the morning and be further down the list...

Im still digesting this move but I would call it a flinch for sure.

at the idea of Rolex catching up to omega at anything. Hard pass on their easy bake oven fake patina.

Desperation or not, I'm first on the list at my AD and quite frankly I am very happy about the prospect of owning a $15k Dweller.

It has a much warmer tone and a "deeper" look to the metal. I definitely get what you're saying about the masses though . At least personally, I just buy to enjoy for myself only, but there is a certain prestige factor some enjoy. I personally like the WG Roman SkyDweller the best, but my money will be going to a SS model
i understand what your saying....my point was the average joe at a glance.....not watch junkies like people on this forum....furthermore we can identify WG Rolexes because we simply know what models we are looking at...my neighbour? he wouldn't know the difference between a SS sub or WG pepsi

I find Sky Dwellers busy looking and quite frankly very unattractive. Somewhere between a Yacht Master II and Day Date..

For sure, I also remember commanding the bezel in the ADs and really having a terrific time, such a shame that so few people were enjoying this innovative fine piece so extending it to SS is a good and almost compassionate move . If it was in their minds all the time I wouldn't be that surprised.

Ceramic bezel daytona first plat, then gold, then ss.

Rolex has a plan always.

Smart move. Slides in perfectly in the mid 10k market as a dress/sport watch that's dominated by AP. Allows them to showcase their most interesting movement IMO to a wider audience as well.

The big disappointment is that they are offering the SkyD in SS with he same dial variations as the PM models

I'm not feeling this move.
Two toned would have sold huge numbers without having to whore it out to steel.
At least the YG and RG SkyD are safe.

Numerals are different though (Arabic/Roman vs. Stick).

Very true. With the other SS/PM models like Sub, Daytona, GMT, and YM2, there are only certain colors you can get in PM so if you want a certain dial/bezel color you had to go PM. Now the SkyD has the same colors for both...a bummer for those who own WG and now have no exclusivity.

Good work Vin! Nicely done. I did tell you not to get this in white gold, if you recall. Wouldn't have rubbed it in but it sounds like you're out.

My take on is the model release is Rolex deliberately position Day Date as a top line watch while making Sky Dweller more attainable during its 5th Anniversary

For the $$, it's a no brainer in SS with those complications.

Rolex brilliance! Patek and other brands are falling behind as Rolex is leading in many ways.

The SS model now with white dial, looks exactly like mine dammit. Oh well, I am sure to flip it now.
Still do not understand your post. You are unhappy that your WG SkD will look like the same as WG/SS watch. I can tell you very openly that 99 percent of people do not know that your watch is made from WG. Also, your rant seems really inadeqate.... there are so many people who have Platonas and WG Daytonas and never complain that they look like SS watches. If tou wanted to show off you could buy RG SkD and tell to everybody that this is really full gold watch

SkD is a very new model. Many people like it but can not afford it. Introduction of SS model opened a quite large market as this watch became more affordable. And still price level for ss model is quite high and will generate very high profits to Rolex.

I do not knwo actual structure of Rolex sales but i assume that Datejust, SS Subs generate the largest part of Rolex revenues. TRF is a very unique place where people get impression that many own PM watches, however, this forum represents only a small part od Rolex owners. For example in real lufe i met only few people who own PM watch. Many have SS or TT watches, however full PM is a very narrow niche devotec to very rich people.

"Steel" SkyDweller, is this a sign of desperation?

When I have my SS SkyD and find someone with a PM SkyD, I'll say, hey, we have the same watch!

Definitely not a sign of desperation in my opinion. Many responses here allude to that fact (could ss up so many other pm onlys, ramp up DaytonaC production, etc.).

I believe this watch was made for people like myself who could not justify buying a PM SkyD over a PP (let's say a 5726) or ALS (let's say a saxonia AC) or people who plainly wanted one but cannot afford one.

I always wanted one/wanted the chance just to try one out for a few months to see if it was a keeper. But never could pull the trigger because of the price point. But when I got word of this, I called my AD right away for the blue dial version. Now 1st on the list and excited! Just like that. Which makes me believe it was a great call by Rolex to pull in a big chunk of that $14k-$18k demographic.

PS. I have a BLRO and I don't really mind if no one knows it's a PM piece but myself. The weight, hence the feeling on the wrist, makes me love wearing it. No one needs to know it's made of PM.
