Sounds like he already ruined his relationship with his AD.

And this notion about ADs knowing that their client sold or traded the watch after purchase is nonsense. Your brother-in-law couldn’t have played it any worse

I think your BIL will never hear from this AD ever again. You can negotiate only from a position of strength. Unless he’s dropping at least $25K/year on other brands or jewelry for a few years, he ain’t coming from any position of strength. My AD is one of the largest Rolex dealers in the USA, my sales rep left the company after 14 years and we still keep in touch, her info has been crucial to my collection. What he did was a death sentence unless he’s built up a relationship (read as $$$$ spent) over a few years and what he did was actually a little childish.

Kudos to the brother in law.

But in today’s environment, ie, severe shortage, if I found a car that had all features I wanted but not in my favorite (but a non-offensive) color, I’d very likely buy it.

Oh yeah!? Flipper! Someone who wants that color won't be able to get it now!

I’ve been on the list for the blue sky dweller. I’ve been offered by the same AD every color under the rainbow besides blue. All rejected.

Kudos for knowing what he wants and sticking to it.

Dude wants one of the two or three hottest currently produced watches on the planet. He’s been swayed plenty.

Instead he’s offered one of the one of the 6 or
7 hottest watches on the planet and gets pissy about it?

I am never going fault a guy for not spending his money on something, but let’s not make this dude out to be some hero.

There is absolutely zero difference.

No, he wants a white dial Daytona and is looking at his preference in a vacuum, not in the context of the "broader watch market," so a black dialed watch isn't "one of the six hottest watches," it's just another watch in a color he's not interested in. Which is how most of the watch-buying world used to consider their purchases...

My brother-in-law refused to pick up his Daytona at retail from AD

As I said the problem isn’t that he turned down the watch. I’ll never fault someone for what they do or don’t want to spend their money on.

What I said was that it seems weird that his reaction to being offered a very popular watch is to get annoyed with the salesperson.

My comment was made in response to someone who was congratulating this fellow for not getting caught up in the “hype”

Someone who wants a white Daytona but is offended at the mere offer of a black one probably isn’t in it for the horology of it all, but for the hype.

People should spend their money on whatever they want, but let’s call it what it is.
