Thanks Padi, yes It's a manual wind and I think I remember reading somewhere else that it was a cal 601, how can I tell if it's 9kt or plated if thats not a silly question ? Any idea what year it would have been made ?
Thanks again for the info.

PS the pic is not the actually watch but it looks exactly the same.My camera doesn't do great quality close ups unfortunatley.

The case back is just a push fit inside if gold you will see hallmarks,or
sometimes around the lugs.Without the serial number not exactly but that
type of dial was produced mid 60s to the late 70s early 80s.A favourite
retirement presentation watch, lots turn up with inscribed backs. The value
for the watch no inscription a mint one around £250--£325 if real gold.Plate
around £125--£195 on a good day they are very nice dress watches.

To quote Ed... "use a bigger hammer."

If you can't remove it, take it to a jeweller. Chances are it may need a cleaning anyways.

Yes they sometimes can be hard to remove, you want a thin bladed
knife to fit between case-back and case.Sometimes there is a wider
slot by the lugs to lever the back off.But I would advise you take it to
a watchmaker,he will have the correct tools. And I would expect it needs
a service, any proper watchmaker could do this for you.

Don't try to open it yourself....that's my advice....as you could cause some permanent and irrepairable damage.

The watch is old and the metal could be weak, especially if it's gold. Take it to your dealer and have it serviced in any case.

Good luck - JJ

We have to humor him, Peter. I think he's depressed over selling that orange abomination.

I will feel bad doing it, John, but sometimes you have to do things that are distasteful for the good of the whole. We can't let the Pumpkin disease destroy what we have built here.
